Criminal justice programs

I have a son who is interested in criminal justice as a major and eventually going into law enforcement. Any suggestions for good programs and what to look for? He is a B student and has a 27 ACT (no prep). We are in Virginia but would like to go north if he can. He grew up playing hockey.

What does he want to do with it? As has been said many times it’s not the major for prospective Homeland Security or FBI or law school. If he wants to be a police officer or go into forensic science, VCU. VCU is surrounded by a city and three counties that have frequent LE job openings. Most of those departments have leadership that did graduate work at VCU. JMU also has a good program. Radford looks to have a good program and my daughter '17 is considering it. One of son’s friends is studying Criminal Justice at Longwood. ODU and GMU also have programs. Virtually every community college has a two year program. My unsolicited advice would be VCU and take some Spanish and courses in accounting and computer security.

He is mostly interested in law enforcement. He may try to do ROTC. He knows criminal justice is not a major for FBI. We need to look at VCU although it may be too much in the city for him. (Although they have a lot of the biotech stuff that he also likes.) We visited JMU with his brother 2 years ago. We should probably look at their program. GMU is too close and is huge. He liked University of Maryland but he may not have the grades to get in. He also really likes Rochester Institute of Technology and attended an open house there. He likes the co-op program. I am not sure I can get him to look at Radford. I know kids who like it but it has a party school rep and he is turned off by that. Whether it is true or not, I don’t know. He is just turned off by the perception.
