I'm helping my friend look for colleges. She's interested in becoming a social worker/ or something in that field, what schools have excellent programs in any of the above majors? It doesn't matter as to location, but no schools that are impossible to get into for your typical average mediocre girl. We were looking at John Jay in NYC, but they don't have any dorms. Any other suggestions?

hey, i go to john jay now, and i really don't suggest it. well, actually i guess it depends on your friends stats. i feel really unfulfilled here-- it is a 95% commuter school and the academic standards are really low. i'm in the honors program, i also got a few scholarships here, and i only had a 1280 SAT and 3.2 high school GPA-- i am probably one of the most academically successful kids here, but that's nothing compared to a lot of other better schools. the honors program is really great but it's only one class a semester-- you still have to take 3 or 4 other classes with kids who are basically unprepared for college and don't know what they're doing. i've heard it's a lot better once you're in more advanced courses and as a graduate or ph.d student-- unfortunately, i won't be here to find out. i'm transferring to santa clara university in california. there are a lot of schools that do criminal justice. i looked into florida state as well.

Don't know what you mean by "typical, average, mediocre girl". But University of Marylad, College Park campus, is really, really strong in these areas.

SUNY Albany ranked very high in crimimology graduate programs.

wows this came back up. she's decided to stay in california. but thanks kids.

Mich State has the oldest (1935) and most prestigious Crim Justice college-level program in the nation. Sociology and the social sciences (like political science) are quite strong as well.
