Criteria for the art schools (a&d/music) vs other schools

I'm an international prospective student applying both to the school of art&design and music.

Are the academic criteria the same for me than for a student that is applying for engineering for example? I mean, do I really need to get close to 36 from the ACT and have a 3-page list of my EC's and community service to prove that I'm not only an outstanding student but a boy close to perfection in every single way? (that was sarcasm by the way).

None of those stats are actually telling anything about my abilities as a musician/artist, so I was just wondering how it works in UM.

Thanks!

Music is separate from Art and Design. Both schools offer admission based on talent as well as academics. For Art & Design a portfolio is required that is evaluated prior to admission. The test scores and GPS requirements for A&D are not as rigorous as for LS&A. A 3.4 and 27-28 will probably do it, but a well rounded and good quality portfolio is just as important. I am not as familiar with the requirements of the music program, but presume the audition process is like the portfolio for art.

Hi there. School of music baseline for academic clearance (meaning, in order to grant you permission to apply or audition) is 3.0. If you were looking at the Performing Arts Tech recording/engineering option, the Math ACT baseline is 28.
For music you will need to submit your repertoire and recommendation in order to be offered the opportunity to audition. For each instrument, there is specific material you can download for the audition. I am not sure if you (as an International) can submit a prescreening audition or not in an effort to save time/expense. The in person audition is well worth the trip nonetheless because you get a great feel for the school.

Not sure degree wise that you can combine AD with SOM, since both are specialized degrees and it is very difficult to schedule BMus requirements plus BFA requirements. However, there is a specialized program called INTERARTS degree you may wish to look at, which I believe is new and is coordinated by both the AD and SOM.

That’s all I know but I’d advise you to get in touch with program advisor asap to get things rolling. Depending on the program, the portfolio requirements or audition material can be quite extensive.

Good luck.
Cheers,
