<p>there was only one reference to almanacs in the passage, if i recall. an insignificant reference at that.</p>

<p>You can assume that if you are near land, you can use a LANDmark to navigate. If you are in the open sea, you can use the stars,latitude, longitude, etc.</p>

<p>HOWEVER, the question asked what they used the stars for and directly after that they tlked bout using stars for the almanac....</p>

<p>no the reference to almanacs was minute, it was a parenthetical statement
something along the lines of ..... (called an almanac back then)</p>

<p>i stick to my answer, even if it is logically flawed. the question gave us specific lines to look at, the almanac reference was not in the lines. albeit my memory of the SATs is fading but i really just don't think almanacs was the answer.</p>

<p>actually, there were atleast 3 lines on the almanac. and sometimes the information is outside the lines given... idk, i could be wrong but no other answer seemed to be supported.</p>
