Critical Reading questions on Blue Book

Hi, I'm studying for the Critical Reading section of SAT, and I have some questions that I couldn't understand in the Official SAT Study Guide (aka Blue Book). I would really appreciate it if you would give detailed explanations for my question!

On pg. 523 Question 19.
(((( the corresponding passage for this question can be found in pg. 522 on the following link:
<a href="http://books.google.co.kr/books?id=9ATgRlJqgwwC&pg=PA522&lpg=PA522&dq=to+conduct+some+forms+of+sleep+research+we+have+to+find+a+way+to+track&source=bl&ots=K7BeLBu5mo&sig=zybyfXQ-29unHWXSeV5ZZKg5dkI&hl=ko&sa=X&ei=_MvHU6m8IIXo8AX8oIGACg&sqi=2&ved=0CEgQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=to%20conduct%20some%20forms%20of%20sleep%20research%20we%20have%20to%20find%20a%20way%20to%20track&f=false">http://books.google.co.kr/books?id=9ATgRlJqgwwC&pg=PA522&lpg=PA522&dq=to+conduct+some+forms+of+sleep+research+we+have+to+find+a+way+to+track&source=bl&ots=K7BeLBu5mo&sig=zybyfXQ-29unHWXSeV5ZZKg5dkI&hl=ko&sa=X&ei=_MvHU6m8IIXo8AX8oIGACg&sqi=2&ved=0CEgQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=to%20conduct%20some%20forms%20of%20sleep%20research%20we%20have%20to%20find%20a%20way%20to%20track&f=false</a>

Lines 55-57 ("Since...sleepiness") primarily serve to
(A) introduce a lighthearted digression
(B) provide a transition to a new subject
(C) offer evidence in support of a prior claim
(D) acknowledge a drawback to an approach
(E) return the discussion to a problem mentioned earlier in the passage

I chose B, because although the sleepiness was mentioned at the beginning of the passage, the paragraph starting with line 55 actually does introduce a new idea, about people's self-rating scale and an alternated method to determine how sleepy a person is. But the answer was E. Oh, and by the way, what is the 'problem' in choice E referring to, exactly?

Your help will be much appreciated. Thanks! :)

The problem is stated in the first sentence of the passage, the need to find a way to measure sleepiness. I can see why you chose B, but there would probably be more of a typical transition word in the sentence if B were correct and E is just a better answer.

I can’t see your image.
However, here is my explanation for that question:
B is obviously wrong because of that part “a new subject”. No, from the beginning to the end, it states that the primary purpose of the passage is to talk about Sleep Research. But from, line 6 to line 54, the author proposes a theory about sleep’s signal: yawning. After moaning a round, the theory proves to be wrong. Thus, the transition “we obviously have to find some other measure of sleepiness” marks a transition from “moaning around” to the main topic-" to track sleepiness over the day" (first passage), aka “some other measure of sleepiness”

Hope this helps

However, considering if you are rushing, this question can be dangerous!

Thank you all ! The replies were all helpful and I hope you visit my upcoming threads frequently! I’ll probably posting another one soon
