critique my portfolio!

I'm currently working on the application process to MICA - Maryland Institute College of Art. I've been nominated for the ArtStar Prize and also need more scholarships to actually attend ( the money is a major problem ). I'm currently working on my portfolio ( therefore i only have about half the amount needed ). I have several other pieces finished to include, but have yet to take pictures and such, so I'd just like a small critique on what I have so far? Thank you!

Also, what else do you think I should include? I have an interior piece I'm working on and a still life, as well. I'm still not sure about the two bird pieces, but I have more of them.

To get into MICA your going to need some stronger pieces-- your portfolio is not very competitive jus of those six pieces.

The snake one was the most successful. I’m not going to bash you on your work and tell what I really think in detail, but if money an issue then you really need to consider another school.

MICA 37,000 a year, not including housing.

MICA is expensive, but I’m sure you know that. But what I didn’t know was how competitive Merit Scholarships are at MICA. Had a friend who got in there and got 40K while another AICAD school gave her 80K. She was really talented, seen her portfolio, but her gpa was below a 3.0. With that being said, grades and portfolio are looked at as equal at MICA.

MICA admission people are very friendly and helpful. I attended a portfolio day with them in November.
Questions?

Have you done a portfolio review with MICA? What made you choose MICA over other art schools? What major are you planing on majoring in?

I agree with wrencher…you’re pieces could be stronger…use some more colour. and concentrate on abstract…I get the feeling you’re stronger in that than in figures. Good luck!

Like the others have said your portfolio needs to improve. My school always sends a lot of people to MICA and RISD, so I have seen the portfolios of those who are accepted, they vary greatly but the two things that unite them are technical difficulty and creativity/originality, both of which you are lacking to some extent. Also a self portrait done in pencil is practically a must for a strong portfolio…

My favorite piece is your first bird in ink or marker, a crane I believe(correct me if I’m wrong). Very simple and gestural. My old life drawing professor would fall in love with it =).

@wrecher- I have other pieces to include, this is just what I have uploaded so far. A representative of MICA came to my school to speak and reviewed some pieces that I had, not my portfolio because I didn’t have one prepared. My art teacher showed me MICA because she attended and new several professors there, and leaving home can’t be done my first or second year, so it’s the most convenient as well. It’s about fifteen minutes from my house, which is great, if anything. I’m going for Illustration or Graphic Design, also.

@keya-Thank you!

@ArtsyGirl- Thanks for the advice on the self- portrait. I’ll definitely work on one.

@Pantherchamps- Thank you so much! The pictures aren’t all that great sides for the ones that are digital, so I’ll definitely have to retake them.

All in all, how do you all suggest that I improve?

Do you think Rutgers-Mason Gross is a good fit?

I’m looking into it as we speak! It’s in New Jersey, which may be a problem. . . but it would still be a good idea to apply, I figure.

I always thought of Rutgers-MG attracting lesser students when compared to MICA.

The great part about it is that it includes music and theater, which are also things that I love and would like to pursue. The tuition is considerably lower, but the deadline for application already passed.
