Cross Country- Chance

Well, what can I say, my grades are less than stellar about a 3.3 at best. I need to know (to Stanford Students who participate in Cross Country) if a star runner could make it into Stanford even if they have sub-par grades. I am considered a minority (if that even makes a difference) and would have strong recommendation letters along with several Cross Country and Track achievements.
I have yet to take the SAT I/II/ACT tests, although I have been scoring relatively high on practice ones. No rude posts please and only post if you have any idea what you are talking about. Unhelpful, rude posts will be reported...

As a 2014 SCEA acceptee, I have talked with the Cross Country coach, Jason Dunn recently. He informs that getting on the team is very competitive, you have to be one of the nation’s top runners, especially because California in itself is a very competitive state to run Cross Country / Track in.
It is possible, but keep in mind that there are students out there who run and are the best in the state/nation AND have stellar academic schedules.

Back in '71-75 my husband ran Cross Country and Track for Stanford. He was the Captain of the Cross Country team, as well. No, he wasn’t Olympic caliber, nor was running his “ticket” to Stanford. It’s a competitive world out there. But, he ran well all four years. It was such a long time ago and I don’t have all the details. I do believe his h.s. coach knew the Stanford coach, so that probably helped. Also, back then I’m sure things weren’t quite as competitive as they are now. I doubt his grades, alone, would get him into Stanford nowadays.

Stanford is one of the best schools in the country for cross country/track. I would recommend that you compare your stats to those of other girls on the team before contacting the coach. I would think that the ballpark would be sub-5 for mile and perhaps mid-17’s for 5K.

Neongreen- A mid-17 5k and sub-5min mile aren’t even close to Stanford’s level.
Sub-15 5k and sub-4:15 mi is more realistic.

^what neongreen posted isn’t good enough for any respectable D1 school, or most good D2 schools. skibum93 is right, i have who ran in high school with a guy who went to stanford for xc, and he was the best in Minnesota at the time. depending on the competition level of your state, you might have to be a state champion to run there. look in the athletic recruits forum, you will probably get better answers

Neongreen made the assumption that OP is female (“other girls on the team”); if so, I would guess those times are in the ballpark.

^o haha sorry, now i look stupid. um yeah those are definitely good enough, a mid 17 is really really good for girls i think. i dont even know if u need to be quite that low for D1, only a handful of girls in MI run that
