CS + (Bachelor of Art Degree or Art Minor)

I’m currently a freshman in the CoE, deciding whether it’d be advantageous to pursue a double major in CS and Art. Immediately after college, I aspire to work with user interfaces/app design/something at least slightly visual that requires programming.

The issue is whether the Art degree (versus just getting a minor) is worth it. Cost and time are not an issue for me, but I am concerned with whether majoring would give me an advantage and how that would impact my chances of attending a graduate school/b-school. I’m more or less gifted in the visual arts, and I’d like to capitalize on this skill, if possible. I have very little experience in programming, and I am concerned with attaining a decent GPA, if that means anything.

The minor requires fewer courses than the B.A., and thus less opportunity for me to hone my skills. Unlike the B.A. degree, however, it does not require humanities courses/ other non-art classes, which would add needlessly to my workload.

Good morning. Given your interests, I would certainly consider the double degree as I feel it will provide you with more flexibility in pursuing work you enjoy. User interface Design is an important and growing field. However, as you point out, to do a dual degree will complicate your schedule in ENG given the other grad requirements for AD. Perhaps the way to test it out is to pursue the dual degree for next year, and if you find the schedule untenable, you’d have the option of dropping back to a minor.
