CS & Engineering at WPI

My son is interested in both CS and engineering (not computer engineering though). Not sure yet which he wants to major in, though. Do students ever switch b/t those two majors? I see that Comp Sci is not in the engineering school.

And is it possible to major in Comp Sci and minor in one of the engineering disciplines, or the other way around?

Thanks in advance for the info!

I know a few CS/ECE, RBE/CS, and ME/RBE double majors, so it’s very doable to do doubles. I can only imagine it’s even more doable to do major/minors.

There is nothing that institutionally stopping you from switching majors at any time that I know of. Logistically, if you spend too many classes in a major and then switch, you may have to overload(very manageable in my experience) or stay an extra semester/year to make up for “wasted” courses.

Agreed, WPI is very flexible about switching between any of the majors. It isn’t like Carnegie Mellon where CS is in its own college, and ECE is a different college and switching between them is not guaranteed.
You can experiment a little in freshman year to see what you like and there is a special course run by Career Services -
