CS minor--which course to start with ?

Hi, I'm a civil engineering major at UIUC and I just registered a cs minor. My question is--which course should I best start with for this minor? I finished cs101 last year, and should I test out of cs125 and and go directly to cs225? I personally do want take cs125 before cs225, but will this be a waste of my time? I'll be a junior this fall.

take CS125

Everyone says 125 is a good introductory course, and gets you very familiar with the programming side. So if you could program in your sleep, I’d probably just test out.

125 has object-oriented programming also. Do you feel that you can test out of 125 with OO concepts?

Either way CS-225 MUST be taken also.

Even if you feel you already know enough to move past it, I would recommend not doing that. I know too many people who have skipped courses thinking that they can handle it only to regret that decision. Even if you don’t learn much, at the very least you set yourself up for the very good CS GPA right from the get go.

how do you sign up as a minor? and when? During orientation? Or after fresh year?

Don’t worry about signing up for it, just talk to an adviser and they can guide you through it whenever you want.
