I haven't received my Engineering Advising Package yet and I was wondering when the Engineering majors get tested on CS, what material is on the test, and when we actually go take the test. Any information about the other placement tests would be great as well!

Look forward to hearing from you guys!

The CS placement test, along with all others, is during orientation. As I recall, when I took it, it was a few short answer questions ranging in difficulty to something you'd find on the AP Computer Science A test to something that would be on the more difficult side for the AB test. Those curricula are available at [url=http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/about.html]AP: About the Advanced Placement Program/url. Afterwards, you are given one of three "scores" - pass with credit, which means you place out of CS 100 and can move on to CS 211 as though you had already taken 100; fail with the suggestion to try 211, which means even though you didn't do well enough to place out of 100, it may be worth skipping ahead to 211 and getting credit for 100 from some other means; or failing, which just means you start from square one.

You'll find out all about this during orientation.

Thanks for the heads-up. So we are supposed to study prior to orientation I assume and be all book ready on that day? Wow. Never would have thought it. Thanks again!!

I took the Spanish 209 placement test during orientation. They posted the results the following Monday. Around 10-15% (by my estimation) of the test takers passed. The material on the placement test was much more advanced than anything we actually had to learn in Spanish 209.

I took the math 192 placement test. I don't think many passed. I got the book and studied a little, but only got through a couple of chapters.

The placement tests are essentially finals for the classes. So if you want examples to study from, look at the class websites from previous years. There are often old tests up.
here's the CS100J website if you are interested CS100J, Fall 2008

Do transfer need to take the tests also? I am a CALS GT. On the website, I read that a math placement is required. But what if I already took the required Cornell calculus classes and they transferred over. Do I still need to take it?

CALS Registrar: CALS college math requirement

So I take it that I do not need to take it because I already have AP credit for calc AB and Cornell accepted the calculus course from my present institution.

You should be good to go
