S18 got accepted in UUIC CS+STAT, he did not get CS as his first option. Want to study computer and work in related area. Computer science would be better bet, now he has option of Computer ENgg at UCSB (in state), Purdue, UW/Udub, Virginia tech, TAMU
What are the career prospect after CS+STAT from UUIC, compared to CS alone. Is the computer science portion same in both option. (class/teacher etc).
What about prospect of GRAD school/ choice after CS+STAT . I know after computer Engg, there are many more choices.
Feedback and opinion will be highly appreciated. Not high school student knows what CS and Computer Engg career really means/ how they will impact long term.
Someone opined that many of the hardware related jobs have moved offshore/ Asia, comparatively there are many more opportunity for CS. Strange but this seems to feel true , looking at silicon valley companies doing well…
Though fees OOS is way too much, we are willing to incur Debt as needed
Thank you.
We visited both the campus, The visit is UIUC was more detailed, son attended CS@ UIUC program where they have one full day of class , interaction, visit to various lab and dorm. The atmosphere was quite energetic, it was open to non admitted and even younger student. The students had goody bag to take home along with a T-Shirt. Would recommend anyone in Jr year to participate if interested in CS. The parents also was given tour of campus and presentation.
In contrast, the UCSB program was 2 hr program, presentation and tour of campus. This was general, not specific focus on CS or any major. People were friendly, students looked happy, I was convinced they would get quality education here. The location is awesome, UCSB is well rated, with 6 Nobel Laurate in campus tells a lot. There is lot of opportunity for research art undergraduate level. Graduate student is only about 10% of all enrollment. Engg school is capped, only 5% of all enrollment in Engg school. The student will get good attention and access to teachers. The teaching faculty to student in engg school is close to 10:1. Awesome if you think about.
At the end the CS enrollment is only about about 20% of the size at UIUC. Also it appeared at UIUC opportunity to do minor or major in other subject is more. The ranking of CS program at UIUC is much higher, internship at bigger companies would be more common, for the competitive students. The distance, cost, weather is clearly negative for a CA student.
Considering everything, back and forth swinging, sons decision was to accept UIUC on second last day!
Admission to UCB LASs school still is an option he has received today after accepting UIUC.
Within few days it will be one of them, UCB or UIUC for CS program!
