CS/STEM semester/summer abroad in English

My daughter is planning to be a CS major next year in college, possibly double majoring in something like physics, math, CE, EE. She is very strong academically and should meet any minimum standards of grades or AP test scores. Has studied Spanish and a little French but we feel that it might be hard to do STEM subjects in a foreign language, so probably more interested in English instruction. Any experience or programs to recommend? I don't know much about this. Thanks.

The obvious choice would be a semester or year abroad in the UK, Ireland, Australia or New Zealand but there are English medium universities around the world. Many colleges run their own programmes which makes things like organisation, funding and course validation much easier. This information is usually available via their study abroad office.

Maybe I’m old fashioned but I’d step aside and let her do the research then come to you with her findings. Its good practice for the real world, and college too.

I plan to take Art History and Finance when I study abroad eventhough my major is CS/Engineering. My mother keeps telling me that there is no “study” in study abroad as in no “sleep” in sleepover. She said to take it easy and enjoy my study abroad experience. There will be plenty of serious studying when I’m back to my college.

Part of the problem is that it’s often difficult to fulfill specific major requirements while studying abroad, so it’s also much easier to take electives because you don’t have to worry about them transferring back as particular courses. Once you get past introductory CS courses (which are taught very differently depending on the school), the upper level classes tend to be more uniform and easily transferrable; my brother spent a year in Germany as a CS major.
If she wants to do a double major, though, that could take away the elective freedom. And engineering also tends to be a very strict major, so depending on the school, that might not be an easy option.
