CSS Financial Aid Profile help...

Okay. My brother is currently in college, but he isn't supported by our income at all. Should I still include him under our household? My college counselor said yes, but my grandfather is saying no. I'm very confused; my college counselor is only twenty-two, so I don't know that I can trust her, and my grandfather isn't exactly a good source either. Does anyone know what I should do? Please help.

Is your brother an undergrad student under the age of 24?

When your brother fills out his FAFSA (and CSS if he has to), who does he list as HIS household? If you are part of his household, then he is part of yours. I would lean toward including him, because unless he is considered independent for financial aid purposes, your household is expected to help support him, whether they do or not. Your counselor is correct.

If, on the other hand, he is considered an independent student (because for instance your parents are no longer living), you would most likely also be independent, and would have a household of one (yourself). FAFSA and CSS household has its own definition, not always the same as a tax household.
