Okay, so my older brother is 21 and he's in the Marine Corps. I was wondering if I should include him when they ask how many people are in my household. He technically still lives with us, but he also lives on base, and my parents don't really have to send him money or buy his clothes. I already submitted the FAFSA, and I didn't include him because I just assumed I shouldn't, but now that I'm working on the CSS Profile, I'm wondering if I should have.

Thanks!

Not for FAFSA. To be included your parents would have to provide half his support or he would be able to answer no to all the dependency questions on FAFSA. They don’t provide half his support. And he can answer yes to the question about being in the service (which makes him independent for FAFSA).

If he was a 21 year old that was not in the service, you would include him as he would be considered a dependent for FAFSA if he decided to go to college before the age of 24 (unless he was married or met one of the other independent criteria). But as he is in the service, he would be considered an independent for FAFSA if he were to leave the service and go back to school.
