My daughter is applying to CSS-profile school that requires non-custodial parent information. Her father (non-custodial parent) is sort of a drifter, who makes very little money (freelance artist) and does not file taxes (legally so, he doesn’t make enough to be required). All his income is cash with occasional check and very little paperwork. He is filling out CSS as a non-filer, but if they question it, there is no documents he can offer. I was wondering if anyone had a similar situation and if colleges came back asking for proofs and what kind. Just hate the idea of this delaying her application and jeopardizing the financial aid award. I called the college, but they just said go ahead and submit as non-filer.
That’s what you (he) has to do. It may not be flawless, and they may require the non-filer document from the IRS, but that is the procedure.
He should file now for 2020. He’s missing out on thousands in stimulus money. Plus it will help his child, if he were to file, since he has very little income.
You can get stimulus money without filing taxes, but it is easier to just file.
He was actually able to get stimulus money without filing taxes. The problem is that he doesn’t have any documentation, so going back to 2020 would be really roughly estimating the amounts. But I haven’t even though of that.
What is the non-filer document? A confirmation that he hasn’t filed?
The non-filer statement is something that is completed by folks who don’t file taxes. It documents the reason why these folks haven’t done a tax return. Colleges need to have this documentation…think about it…otherwise any parent could just say they had $0 income and just didn’t file. The non-filers statement puts this to rest.
Here is one school’s directions (most google searches come up with ways to file to get the stimulus payments, and those forms are now closed), but it should work for any college (they send the statement to the parent who didn’t file)
Thanks!
