Hey all! So my parents are divorced and my mother has custody. However, my father makes most of our money and he will be contributing (though we’re very low income).
crucially, though he is required to, he HAS NOT filed 2017 tax returns. I don’t know why, there’s something going on with him emotionally that I don’t understand.
How do we prove his income to schools? Non-filing forms don’t seem to work because their language always states they’re for folks who cAN’T apply, versus don’t. My dad can, he just won’t.
What should I do? Is there a form for this?
Thank you!
He needs to file the 2017 return.
Either that…or look at FAFSA only schools where your non-custodial parent isn’t included on the form.
He is way past due for filing 2017 (past the extension deadline, even). At this point he is likely in violation of the law if he hasn’t filed 2017 US returns. Could he be mixing up what year is needed? Or thinking that somehow your mom or you will see his info on the non-custodial CSS form or if he sends returns to the colleges? You and your mom will not.
I’m not aware of any way to get an exception for this, except applying to FAFSA only schools if your mom is the custodial parent.
