CSS Profile Corrections

I just mailed off the IDOC packet for D. We submitted the CSS Profile back in January, because it was required then for some of her colleges, using estimated figures. Parents taxes were filed last week. Not surprisingly, the actual figures on our tax return have some differences from the estimates on the previously submitted Profile. A small business made a few hundred dollars more than estimated; some deductions were overlooked when estimating for the Profile. The result is many figures that are not exactly the same, although the net difference is less than 1% of AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) and $20 in federal tax paid.

So, my question is, should we call all the colleges and arrange to submit a corrected Profile, or not? On the one hand, the net difference just doesn't seem like enough to matter, and I can't think that generating and processing this correction would be a meaningful use of anyone's time. On the other hand, our tax return does show different numbers than the Profile. I am concerned that it doesn't look good to provide inconsistent information.

I’d like to know an answer to this too. I called one of the schools where my D applied and the FA person said to print our the CSS/Profile that was submitted and write in the corrected numbers and mail the corrected packet to them. Sounds a bit archaic but I looked through the College Board CSS Profile page and it doesn’t look like it lets you type in corrections. I used estimates from back in November so they clearly need updating

You cannot update the Profile online. You need to call each school to find out their procedure for updating. They will tell you what to do.

I am curious about this too - why would we need to update the Profile if the school now has the 2011 tax forms?

As the original poster on this thread, I confirm what thumper1 says. We phoned the FA offices and found that about half the schools didn’t want us to send CSS Profile corrections. They said they prefer to pick up the changes themselves, when they review the tax returns. Others very much did require a corrected profile to be submitted. Of these, some preferred us to mail a hard copy, others preferred a fax or email submission.
