CSS PROFILE for SCEA Applicants?

It takes Yale two weeks to receive the CSS profile?

I’m applying for the Questbridge College Match, but I don’t know if I’m a finalist yet. Finalist notification is on October 23rd, and college match materials are due by November 1st.

Can I submit the CSS profile after I find out about finalist status?

So I have completed the CSS profile, but I also need to complete the business supplements and send in the tax forms. Would I mail these directly to the financial aid office or go through the college board IDOC system? I finished the CSS profile on Tuesday, but I haven’t received an email about IDOC or anything

I have a question as well. Based off of the FAQ’s Entomom provided, it says that Yale would receive the CSS Profile within 24 hours of its submission whereas a previous poster said that Yale needed it two weeks in advance. Does anyone know which one is accurate? Perhaps Yale only begins processing the Profiles after Oct. 21st which would explain the message that a previous poster who submitted it on Oct. 4 got.

jgraider,

For SCEA, the Y FA website says to send 2009 tax forms directly to Student Financial Services, see the address at the bottom of the page:

[Yale University Financial Aid > Prospective & Transfer Students > Early Action Application Guidelines for U.S. Citizens, Permanent Residents, and Canadian Residents](<a href=“Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services”>Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services)

The SCEA webpage doesn’t mention IDOC and when you look at the RD webpage, it says that IDOC is available in Feb:

[Yale University Financial Aid > Prospective & Transfer Students > Regular Decision for US Citizens](<a href=“Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services”>Welcome | Student Financial and Administrative Services)

This is likely because IDOC is for 2010 tax forms and Feb is about the earliest anyone has the information to complete taxes.

MrM,
It seems that it’s closer to 24 hrs and definitely not 2 weeks before schools get the Profile after I submit.

If you are applying to Yale SCEA and will also be applying to other schools RD (even if admitted) in order to weigh the financail aid packages, what is the point of doing the CSS early? Does Yale expect SCEA students who are going to be asking for FA to submit the form by the Nov. 1 deadline? Basically, other than getting a non-binding early estimate, does waiting till next year have any impact on your ultimate financial aid package?

Ah thank you again entomom

If you are definitely going to apply to schools RD and will definitely look at all FA packages, there probably is no point. However, some people might want an early read from Y since it is such a generous school and may give them an indication of what to expect from other schools.

I don’t know what the numbers are, but I’d guess that most fr applicants would like to know a FA estimate to get some idea how affordable Y would be for them.

Probably not for Y because it has a large endowment and I haven’t seen any indication (so far) that later FA applicants get smaller packages. I wouldn’t necessarily extrapolate this to other colleges as most are not as generous as Y.

Thanks entomom.

Sorry if this is an irrelevant question - I’ve never really found a need to actually post on this forum, but financial aid is really confusing me.

So the November 1st deadline for CSS is not necessarily a cutoff? We can still submit the profile after that even if applying SCEA?

From the FA SCEA link above:

So, it is the recommended, but not required date. Nov 1 is if you want a provisional FA package in mid-Dec if you are admitted. Yes, you can submit the Profile later, see the FA website for later deadlines.

Thanks so much entomom, you’ve been ridiculously helpful everywhere on this forum!

You’re welcome! FA is confusing, so be sure to ask if you have any further questions.

Thank you, entomom for your insightful information!

Anyway, I’ve actually decided that I will do the CSS by the RD deadline even though I’m
applying SCEA.

If I get rejected, then well, I wouldn’t need the forms. If I do get accepted, I would still be applying to several RD schools anyway, so I don’t mind getting the FA package a bit later. The estimates in december wouldn’t change my mind about anything.

I’m applying SCEA, but my parents business is failing now and our finances are expected to change a lot by 2011. Would it be better for me to submit the CSS form by RD deadline or send it now?

It doesn’t matter. Either way they determine FA based on 2010 financial information, 2011 does not matter. And what you get with a early submittal is provisional and will go up or down based on final 2010 taxes.

Also, if you’re sending the business/farm supplement, which asks for both 2009 and 2010 expenses, what if we only have the 2009 expenses?

Thanks entomom!

I’ll admit that I’m not familiar with the b/f suppl. Won’t you know the 2010 information by the deadline in March??

Yes, so does that mean I do not have to send the Business/Farm supp by Nov 1?

also when yale says: “Submit signed copies of your parents’ 2009 federal tax returns (including all W-2s, forms, schedules, and business-related tax returns) to Student Financial Services”
does that really mean all forms? that seems like a lot of paperwork!

I just went back to look at the Y FA webpage and my reading of it is that all of the necessary documents need to be filed by Nov 1 ONLY if you want a provisional FA award in mid-Dec when SCEA decisions come out. If you are OK waiting, you can use the March 14 deadline, and even then, it will be a provisional FA package unless ALL 2010 information is final.

If you’re insure reading it, just give Y FA a call, they’re very nice and will answer all your questions.
