I am working with a student who is a US citizen but both parents live abroad and are not (no SSNs therefore). He has filled out the CSS Profile, correctly I believe, but we CANNOT get it to go to anything but the options to get the fees taken care of by "codes" from the colleges. Two of his colleges do not supply codes, according to his phone calls to them. Anyone run into this, and how do we solve it? He spent 25 minutes on the phone with CollegeBoard (I usually find them very helpful in untangling stuff like this) to absolutely no avail. They seemed to try to reset it but could not get it to go through. This student is quite savvy about such things so I trust his discussions on the phone (normally I would be doing them, but I believe he was clear and articulate).

CollegeBoard said that the citizen issue was the problem, but there must be LOT of US citizen students who choose to file the CSS Profile, and do not get fee waiver codes for it just because they have non-citizen parents.

One college deadline is 15 January so we need to get this worked out!

I’m confused. Are you looking for fee waivers from the CB or are you looking for a way to use the credit card? Your thread title implies that the Profile will not permit payment by credit card.

If it’s the credit card question…make sure the student HAS a credit card and not a debit card. We had this problem one time. We were unable to use a debit card (not sure if CB allows that now).

Are you outside the US? If so, there could be an issue between the CB accounting system and the banking system of the country that you are located in. These things happen. Have him find out what kind of payment CB will accept.

If he’s trying to use his parents credit card or a card that does not have a US billing address that could be the problem. Try buying a prepaid card.

@Thumper: the problem is that the website will not go through to the page where one can pay with a credit card. The only page the website will go through to, is the page which asks for fee waiver codes from the colleges (do they have such numbers? So far I have called 3 which have never heard of such). It will not go through to the page which lets (poorer) students submit without paying, nor will it go through to the page that lets them pay with a credit card.

We are stumped.

This is totally from within the USA–USA credit card too, I think.
