CSS profile

I am currently trying to finish my CSS profile, but it is taking me an extremely long time and Im have such a difficult time finishing it. Mainly because my parents don't speak english and therefore I am left to do this form all by myself. My question is: does everything on the CSS profile have to be 100% accurate? I mean there are some random questions out there that I dont really know how to answer, like questions about the black lung benefits or veterans non-education bills. Im really mad that they dont have these forms in a different language, it would make life much easier. Also another quick question, my parents filed a 1040 form but the profile asks about questions regarding the form 2555, is that supposed to be another form my parents must file? Thanks.

Look at the returns…if it says 1040 then thats what they did and its fine…Yes the CSS Profile is long…did you do your FASFA too?

yea i already did my fafsa. I like it much better. Much simpler questions than the CSS. I mean they ask the most ridiculous/irrelevant questions

I know…
Im a parent and I had a hard time…
The most important number are the AGI…
adjusted gross income…

yea I figured while just roaming through the questions, probably the most important questions are the sections that ask about income. I actually just finished the profile, I printed it out, much easier to do. I checked over it twice too. and guess what? I go to collegeboard, open up the CSS profile link, and the website is unavailable. Great timing isn’t it?

Ohh nooo…
as long as its saved you should be fine…
My son was lucky…I did the FASFA the CSS Profile…and all the worrying too!!

I sure do envy your son. and a quick question, when did you complete your son’s fafsa and css profile? My dad complains to me telling me I am really late and I won’t get any aid. And they have been pressuring me to get it done, when they dont even realize they are the ones that are supposed to do the parents section, not me.

OK your a bit late…but I would call each school you applied to. Make sure they know you have submitted it…
Follow up with them to make sure they dont require any additional documents.
Also ask them if they have a website you can check for the status of the application for aid…or if you can view your award letter online.

am I really late? I mean i finished my fafsa in february. Ok im starting to get worried now. So does that mean I won’t get as much aid? Yea im going to contact my college soon about my financial aid

You should be fine for the FASFA for sure.
I actually updated mine today.
I think every college had different dealines for the CSS…so I would check their websites…

well i applied and got into the university of Michigan and their information for financial aid is due by April 30. But even on their website they said they will take forms later than April 30, but cannot guarantee aid. Well I just e-mailed them asking if they got my FAFSA and if my forms are actually late. But hopefully I will get as much aid as possible, since I am applying outside of Michigan. So I really need aid and im literally applying to any scholarship that I can.

Good for you!
I wish my son would do more scholarships…
Im on the east coast…
He got into some decent schools but we need aid too…
Do you have a fall back?

joshjlee…if your parents only file 1040, then you only need to supply all the information from the form. certainly, you still have to calculate all their assets including bonds and savings, etc. file it as soon as possible because you don’t want to decline your acceptance due to not getting any aid. moreover, if your parents own businesses, you have to supply information from their business returns tax documents. i understand that they are very complicated and it took me more than 10 hours.

I live in Washington, and I applied to the University of Washington which was my safety college. But I would rather really go out of state. and also a mentor once told me that money should never get in the way for going to a college. Well if I do end up have to get loans, it will at least be more of a motivator to have me work harder to pay them off. Also I had a really quick question. On the CSS profile it asks for each individual parent income earned from work. But my parents filed a joint income tax return so what should I write?

Do they have different W-2’s?

yes. And also when CSS profile asks to enter my parent’s businesses is that for this year, or for businesses that they had in the past like in 2008 or 2009?

I think you bast the buisness on 2009…
But if they have w-2’s you can show their wages seperately…

ok well im talking to my dad right now, and he said that he has a 1099 joint form, and also a 1099 form that is separate.

I would say do the best you can…
Alot of schools require copies of the taxes evetually…
I had to send out 4 packages with my taxes in them today…

ok well I think im just going to put for parent 1 (my dad) the joint income from work and leave parent 2 blank. Also, does my parents’ monthly mortgage payment include just the house we are living in, or others too? My dad bought another house so other people can rent it. Should I include that as well in the monthly mortgage payment?
