Do you HAVE TO complete the CSS Profile for U of M? Or can you just opt to not do it. I have completed the FAFSA but not the CSS...is it necessary that I fill out the CSS to receive financial aid? If I don't does it mean I wont get any financial aid? Also, whens the deadline for finishing the CSS?

If you log on to Wolverine Access, you can check your financial aid document status. It should show if they are waiting for the CSS/Profile. My d’s financial aid app was not reviewed until all requested docs had been received.

Tas…indeed, Profile students REQUIRE that you submit the Profile. U of M is a profile school and tells you so…#1839 I believe.
So, you’ll want to be filling that out pronto.
Cheers,
K

Ohh…well I checked my wolverine access and it says the under the CSS profile “waived.”
does that mean I dont have to do it?

hmm…That’s certainly what it sounds like. But I would double check with them just to be sure. Maybe email them? financial.aid@umich.edu

Are they still waiting on any other documents? If not, you should be hearing from them pretty soon. Once all our docs were in, d heard within 24 hours.

Crackerlady: Lucky you. I am still waiting. Maybe crackerlady is alphabetically higher ranking than kmccrindle :)

What date did you receive notification? I thought I was ahead of the curve, submitting Jan. 4th…I even checked to make sure my ex submitted the non-custodial css. I faxed verification docs about a week and a half ago (before they emailed me, because I saw it on WA).

OP - maybe you were waived if on FAFSA you were eligible to file the 1040EZ or some such? Like crackerlady said, check!

Cheers,
K

kmc - I thought all our docs were in by mid-Feb. But by randomly checking WA, I discovered that they were waiting on a tax return. (It said they had requested it on 2/28, but to my knowledge, we never received any such request.) I mailed the tax return on 3/10, they noted it received on 3/13, and d got her award notice via email on 3/14.

I’m really grateful for this site, or I wouldn’t even know what Wolverine Access is, and we would have been waiting for who knows how long!

Actually, as I was typing that post to you this a.m., then thought maybe I should call fin aid, I discovered U of M was updating WA and our package is already there (sort of…the full pdf has not yet updated.)
I had the same thing happen re: verification noted 2/28. The woman at fin aid told me that I was just about to be mailed a request for it the other day but they realized I’d seen it on WA and faxed it. We just beat them to it. I agree, thank goodness for thread surfing or I too would still be waiting!
Cheers,
K

whens the deadline to submit both FAFSA and CSS? I’ve submitted FAFSA already, but when i checked WA for financial status, it said they havent received anything yet.

The “soft” deadline is passed (Feb 15 for optimal). I think the hard deadline is end of April but I would really suggest you call them, like, TODAY to discuss your file. They expected to have had the CSS submitted in January.
Before you call them, check your online link to your FAFSA SAR to make sure you’ve officially submitted with pin numbers an all that. Find your confirmation number. Etc. They released numerous packages yesterday. You will not want to delay, since this information will impact your decision process.
Good luck.

i am pretty sure i officially submitted my FAFSA because all the other schools(UIUC, OSU etc) i’ve applied already received it.
Do they update WA financial status only if i submitted both FAFSA and CSS? or only for the students who have been admitted? because i got deferred back in december and still waiting for their final decision. thanks

Hmm. My suspicion is that they would not process a fin aid calc for a student until/unless admitted (why do twice as much work…not efficient). Not sure if that would be why FAFSA doc didn’t post (admission is need blind, so FA doesn’t technically know you exist until you are admitted, I believe. Then they go get your data.) Might still be worth a call to clarify. The one thing I know for sure is that CSS Profile is not optional, so if you want consideration, file.

so if i dont file the css will i still get an award letter? the fafsa/css is just for loans/fed grants right? i can still get scholarships from the university right?

i believe the css is for the university grants. fafsa is federal only

Why are you resisting filing the CSS? If you don’t want financial aid, then don’t file. But it is very late in the game for merit scholarships. Michigan will also give occasionally generous grants to meet the gap for instate or make it substantially (eg. $15k) less expensive for out of state students to attend if you’re lucky. They WILL NOT do this for you if you don’t file the CSS. If you’re serious about attending, then FILE THE CSS instead of looking for ways to get out of it. Some of the merit scholarships are ALSO need informed, meaning they want the detailed financial profile to help determine how to use the scholarship money best.

I filed CSS in january after I was admitted out of state. And as kmccrindle said, the CSS allowed Michigan to give me $17,000 from the Michigan Grant. So definitely file the CSS if you want the money. This is the most money any public school will give you out of state, probably because Michigan has a $7.6 Billion Endowment.

Okay then…I will file the CSS ASAP. It’s just that most of the information is my parents’ and they barely have any time to fill out the app.

Tas, I know some parents hate those invasive forms, I am one of them! But just tell them that Shayman91 received $17,000 by so doing! I’m sure they could find the time if they understood what was at stake. Don’t take no for an answer : )
