Financial Aid question

I have a question about financial aid for u of m..

Will you only receive scholarships and other awards after you complete the CSS profile and FAFSA?? I was told by someone that the application itself was also a financial aid application. I haven't filled out either and was wondering if that was why I have not heard anything back from the University.

So should I rush to finish these things or just get them done before the deadline.. I want to be considered for all scholarships and am really confused about this whole process..

It’s my understanding that to qualify for need-based scholarships you have to fill out the FAFSA and CSS Profile for Michigan. For merit based scholarships, your application to the university suffices.

Mythreedd…that it not quite correct. The FAFSA is required for non-need scholarships. The quote from the UofM website follows. They also require the CSS Profile for entering students, but it is not required in subsequent years.

“Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1 (and preferably by February 15) to be considered for need-based and non-need-based federal and state grants, scholarships, loans, and Work-Study. Be sure to list Federal School Code 002325 so that a record will be sent to the University of Michigan.”

So, RONDIZZLE, you should be collecting numbers as the deadlines are approaching quickly. Good luck!

Ok thanks, but how is it that people heard of scholarships (if i remember right) before Jan 1st??? And I think ill have to wait a while before I file FAFSA or whatever, because my mom said she doesn’t have her W2 forms or something yet… Man this college stuff is confusing lol

I didn’t submit the FAFSA or the CSS profile and I got a scholarship so that information obviously is not correct.

Motion12345…congrats you must have had awesome stats!!

Perhaps they heard back from the merit-based/other scholarships, which are evaluated based on your application to the college. I believe FAFSA/CSS is need based, so they have to look in your family’s income, situation, etc., which somehow relates to taxes and the W2 form that you mentioned.

I agree, this is confusing. It doesn’t stop after college apps are submitted. :(

No, the FAFSA and PROFILE aren’t requried for merit-only scholarships. Lot’s of people have already been awarded some without submitting these documents.

Thanks, thats what I was thinking…I just didn’t want to sit back and never get anything then realize its because I didn’t fill out the forms…

Motion…congrats! Would you mind sharing which scholarship you have been awarded?

If you really want merit aid, and since their website states it is needed, why risk the chance of not getting something by not filling out the forms? If you want or need the unsubsidized Stafford Loan you will need to do it. If you really aren’t sure, send the Scholarship office an email or call them. We do not qualify for need-based aid and filled the forms out. At an Honors orientation/meet & greet, the scholarship manager told us that by doing so “it put us in the pool” and that they use their funds for recruiting academic talent. I’m glad we filled it out…That Dean’s Scholarship comes in handy for LSA Honors, OOS.
