CSU and med school

Which CSU give you the best chance to get into med school?

The CSU where you can excel and can get the best possible GPA in the Med school course requirements along with access to Medically related EC’s (volunteering/shadowing).

Adding to above, the one where you and pretty much you alone can produce a competitive app in all respects, including high GPAs and MCAT (including subscores), ECs and a PS (personal statement) that show you have the qualities that med schools expect MDs to possess (eg altruism, compassion, communication skills, etc) and strong LORs. And even, even if you have all the above, you’ll only be offered an interview which if you come across as rude, arrogant, etc, say bye bye to your chance at that school. And when I use GPAs as plural, a GPA is calculated for each year and separately for science and non science courses. It’s not as simple as oh I have a 4.0 A in psych and a 3.0 B in chem, therefore I must have a 3.5 GPA. Finally as I’m assuming you’re a CA resident, it will be critical to apply broadly (OOS) as most CA students who start med school will attend OOS as CA is the most competitive state and there are just not enough spots in CA.

Did you change your mind and now want to go to med school instead of dental school?

I am interested in biology for dental. I want to be an orthodontist

It’s way past May 1st. Where did you SIR?

@mom2collegekids: OP accepted Chico State but was taken off the waitlist for Cal Poly Pomona.

@bosselmo: I went to Cal Poly Pomona (in the dark ages) and I had several fellow students/friends that were accepted to Medical school. Again this was many years ago and I am sure things have changed. I would also comment that the majority of my friends actually majored in Microbiology vs. General Biology and were more successful in getting into Medical and Dental school. Something to consider when setting up your schedule.

I was told a minor in Chemistry was my best bet? So, my plan was major in Biology and/or Business and minor in Chemistry. This way I can have my own Ortho Office someday.

and probably a really nice boat too…

Go where you think you will excel. Your college GPA plays a much larger role than institutional prestige.
