CSU -> CC -> Transfer?

Hey all, I'm attending a CSU for the first time as a freshman but something recently came up that might require me to be closer to home. I was wondering if I just finish this semester out (we use the semester system) if any of my credits will be transferable if I enroll in my local community college for the Spring 2012 semester? Thanks all.

Yes, most your classes will transfer just fine between CCC, CSU and UCs–the system is very transfer friendly. The more “standard” the classes are the more likely there is an equivalent at the other institutions (such as English 1A, 1B, Calc sequence, Stats, Intro to Soc, Intro to Poli Sci, most first and second year Bio and Chem sequences, Most first and second year Foreign Language sequences, etc.) One way to check is to go to Assist.Org to get a basic idea of articulation agreements already in existence.

Thank you for your response Annika!

Another question I have in regards to me transferring to a CCC for Spring 2012 are unit limits. If I go about my plan, I will have earned 15 CSU credits by the end of this semester, but I’ve heard that in regards to transferring some UCs & CSUs place a limit on how many units a transfer student can have to be considered a CCC transfer student. Now my question is, if I do go about my plan, will I run into any issues about having too many credits by the time my 2 years at the CCC is up, and it’s time to transfer? Also, does anyone know if I could run into any issues with getting my GE courses at my CCC due to priority?

You should be fine. Usually the limit is in the 86 - 90 semester credits area. You need to check that limit for each UC, since they are different. However, if you stay under 70 you should be clear for all the UCs.

It can be difficult to get into GE courses at CCCs these days. Be persistent. Show up for the first day of the class if you are on the waiting list. Sign up for the early morning or late evening classes if they are the only ones open. Go to more than one CCC if needed (in the Bay Area there are multiple CCCs within commuting distance of each other). Some of the CCCs have priority registration for honor students (must sign up) or other categories like team athletes, etc–see if you can qualify for early priority registration by being in one of those categories.
