Hi guys,

I am currently a freshman at CSULA. I really, really want to go to a UC. My plan is to transfer to a CC for my 2nd year and transfer to a UC for my 3rd year. I currently hold only 20 UC-transferable courses. Is going to a CC for 1 year and then transferring a good idea? Will I complete my IGETC in 1 year? Please offer some advice.

Do you mean 20 units? I went from a CSU (fall 11) then CCC for spring 12. If you really want to go to a UC, I would recommend going to a CCC since it’s easier to transfer. Use the summer session to your advantage. It may be difficult to transfer within one year. I was able to finish everything because I was taking 20 units a semester and seven units in the summer. It also depends on your major.

Yes you can do it!

I’m doing the same thing right now.

I’m gonna be applying for Fall 2014.

I highly doubt you will finish your IGETC in 1 year. Some of your classes form CSULA won’t count in the CC/UC’s IGETC and so on.

It will take you 2 years.

I went to CSU Chico for my freshman year and I didn’t really like it. I had TOO much fun up there.

I’m planning on transferring to a UC.

Yes, I mean 20 units. Thank you guys!!

Remember! You can also use the summer sessions to get better registration for the fall. It took me approx 2 years (upon graduating high school, engineering major) to transfer out.

Same boat as all of you guys. In one year, it’s very possible. You’re going to have to push the units per semester like I did. I went to SJSU for my first year (Fall '11 and Spring '12), and I transferred to a CCC this year, and I’ll have everything completed and barely going over the 60 unit requirement to transfer. You can complete IGETC with some of your CSU courses, especially if it’s just a general class such as Philosophy 001 or Calculus. Good luck.

I suggest making an appt with the xfer counselor at your CC to make sure what I’m about to say is correct, but it looks to me like you can file a TAG application (guaranteed admission) as long as you complete the last 30 units at a CC. This only applies to some of the UC schools with the TAG program. See the matrix at <a href=“University of California Counselors”>University of California Counselors; and look at the column about what is required to file a TAG.

Be weary of unit limitations for UCs. Your safe at the moment, but be sure to be aware that there are unit caps.

I personally think it would take more that 1 year if you only have 20 units. Combine that with stress of actually trying to get enrolled into the classes you need will delay your progress. Also, in my opinion I think if you’re serious on transferring to a UC you should start CC immediately, but please don’t take my word for it.

You’re at the very least in better state than I am in my chance to transfer.
