CSU Chances/School choice?

Hey everyone,

I just calculated my CSU GPA and its looking around 3.2-3.3, with 8 honors points included as well. I know it’s not superb, but it’s what I have to work with. My current ACT is a 26, but I just took it again this past Saturday and will be taking it in October, so I expect it to go up a few points.

I’m also an OOS from Missouri but used to live in California. Extra info is my father qualifies me for the Cal-Vet waiver, so money isn’t an issue as schooling will be free after the first year. I was just curious to see what CSU’s would be a reach and match for me currently and what possibilities would open up granted my ACT goes up. Also, I am taking 3 SAT II subject tests in October and was curious if this will boost my app.

Oh and I’m interested in Marketing/IB for a major if that helps with anything

Thanks in advance an let me know what you all think!

(I posted this in a CSU thread but figured I’d get more traffic here)

The state won’t cover your living expenses, just tuition; will you be living with your Dad? Rents are very expensive at the popular CSU campuses.

Your ACT and GPA are low for the popular CSU’s.
Try the non-impacted schools.

I have some living connections around Fresno and Stanislaus but would rather not attend those campuses; my preferred choices would most definitely be: SDSU, Fullerton, Long Beach, and Chico

My super scored ACT is also a 27 making my Cali EI 922 compared to an 880 before. I’m not sure if it makes any difference or not but just another tidbit of info.

SDSU is probably a stretch but, apply to all the ones you list and see what happens… decide in April/May.

Good luck

For SDSU, you want an EI of around 1000+ for a solid chance. As @NCalRent stated, apply and see what happens.

What do you mean by “my schooling will be free after the first year”? Isn’t your CalVet benefit good for the first year? I hadn’t hear that requirement.

@raskolnyki As an OOS, the waiver only applies once I establish my residency which occurs after I live in California for one year; following that year, I will get free tuition until I’m 26-27 as that is when I’m no longer considered a dependent

I thought it was based on his residency. But I’m sure you’ve done your homework on this, so I’ll have to defer to you. Good luck with your studies!

How do you plan on establishing residency? It goes through 1° your living in CA and working without taking classes for a year + 2° your parent(s) living there, paying taxes there, etc.

@MYOS1634 my parents used to live there with me as well and still pay property tax due to land they own in the Sacramento area. I know it’ll work because currently my brother is attending CSU Fresno with use of the waiver and my parents have been here the whole time

ok good. It’s very important to check this ahead of time.
