Hi, I’ve finished my freshman year at CSU Stanislaus and planning on majoring in Computer Information Systems (under the Business Administration major). However, I found my college experience there unenjoyable to lack of opportunity and limited things to do. I have a good chunk of my ge’s finished but still have more to go (same for major courses). One potential plan for me was to go to De Anza (a CC) in order to finish my requirements and be able to transfer to a different school for fall 2017. I was also planning to go to De Anza to take courses in order to boost my GPA (and I have just finished taking 2 summer courses there). UCI, Cal Poly, and USC were ones that I considered. Is this a good plan? Will going from CSU to CC look bad on my application (this is something my mom is worried about)? What are my prospects of doing this (and what happens if I don’t get into the schools of my choice)? And are there other good schools that offer business admin: cis?
One last thing as well: another school I wanted to transfer to was SJSU. Instead of CIS, they offer Management Information Systems. What is the difference and is the career prospects for the major good?
Please help as I very confused and worried about what my next step should be.
If Stanislaus is not where you want to graduate from, then starting at DeAnza for Fall '16 is a really good idea.
You’re not be the only one who’s had a change of heart in this way, and if you’re thinking about transferring to a UC or another CSU for Fall '17, then your best course of action is to transfer FROM DeAnza or another California CC.
As long as your registered in a California CC, you are also eligible for a TAG at Irvine. Be sure to check out the requirements and the strict September 30 deadline.
I would encourage you to go to DeAnza as soon as possible and speak with a Transfer counselor so that you know you’re taking qualifying courses for transfer, as their classes begin sooner than Stanislaus
Also, if you do start your Fall classes at DeAnza (or any other CA CC) don’t forget to officially withdraw from Stanislaus, or their could be issues.
To transfer to another CSU, you’ll need 60 units (the right 60) and a competitive GPA. Transferring into CP SLO as a non-local applicant is a longshot. Same is true for SDSU. (don’t know your GPA so, that is a guess but, neither admit many transfers from schools other than their Local CCs.)
Classes start at Stanislaus next week; I presume you have registered and they are expecting to see you there. I’d stay put and apply to several schools you might like to attend in Fall 17.
What is a competitive GPA for CSU to CSU transferring (as in Stanislaus to SJSU)?
And one of the main things I’m worried about is meeting the requirements regarding the major classes. I have a lot of my ge’s done, but in terms of majors I just completed macro and still need micro, financial + manageriel accounting, and calculus. I don’t think a semester system at Stanislaus will allow me to meet that, but will it work out if I go to De Anza? Am I allowed to apply to somewhere like SJSU with the plan on finishing those course in the future?
The links i provided above show the historic GPA transfer threshold by major at SJSU and Sac. It varies quite a bit by major. And - it varies a little year to year based on the applicant pool.
You need to have a course plan that will take you from your application window until your start date at your new school. You’ll report 4-6 courses in progress and another 4-6 as planned for Spring 17. With 2 semesters and careful planning, you should be able to cover the required classes and meet the 60 unit threshold.
