Hello, I am currently a freshman finishing my spring quarter at Cal Poly Pomona. My grades in high school were not that great, so I wasn’t accepted into any of the colleges I wanted.
I want to transfer to an UC for my junior year, but I heard that it is nearly impossible. I will most likely have a GPA of 3.88 by the end of my freshman year and the highest I can raise it if I work my butt off sophomore year and get straight A’s is a 3.90~3.93 GPA. I’m not sure if I will be accepted with this GPA compared to everyone else.
I have two plans in mind. One is to transfer to a CC for my sophomore year and transfer to an UC for my junior year. Second one is to complete my sophomore year in my CSU and apply to transfer into a private school. I read everywhere that it is easier to transfer to a private school from a CSU than to transfer to a UC from a CSU. Does anyone have any experience or advice? Please help
My stats:
Dean’s Honor - Fall, winter, most likely spring
President’s Honor - Freshman year
GPA: 3.88
What is your major? If it is engineering, then Cal Poly is really quite well regarded and it’s degrees are ABET accredited. You don’t really need to transfer to find good internships and jobs. If you really want to transfer, then after your Sophomore year will be best. Your GPA is quite good and you should be competitive, however, some of the schools you apply to may only take in a small fraction of the transfer applicants and the ones which accept a high fraction might not be significantly better than Cal Poly (but probably more expensive), so be prepared.
far from impossible, but, what do you hope to accomplish with the transfer? What is missing at CPP that you hope to find at UCX?
You can use this tool to see how many people went from CPP to a UC last year - and their GPA.

This one will show you the transfer GPA by major

I am wondering that too. What is it that you are missing at CPP that another school may offer? Do tell…please!
My major is business administration with an emphasis on marketing management.
Nothing is very official, but I thought about transferring because so far, most of my classes were very “easy.” I feel like I’m in high school again. I learned nothing new so far and I have had only one class that opened up my mind.
However, I do realized that I am only in my freshman year of college and I know that I will encounter some classes that will truly appeal to me. I just wanted some second opinions.
If you don’t hate it beyond that you don’t feel challenged, I would consider staying. Upper div classes will be more engaging.
