I got accepted to both and I’m torn. I was wondering if anybody currently attends one of these schools, and if so what made you chose it and are you happy with it? Also if you could give a pros and cons list.
I always thought Cal Poly SLO was consistently rated much higher than other CSU’s. Some say it’s pretty much a UC in terms of opportunities, rigor, and credibility.
They are both good schools. CP SLO kinda locks you into your major and San Luis isn’t for everyone.
Which do you prefer and why?
SLO!
I’ve also heard of cal poly smelling like manure and I was wondering how bad is the actual smell or if its bearable and you get used to it? I come from the Bay Area.
You should definitely visit these two schools before deciding, to alleviate the “what if factor”. Cal Poly’s acceptance is 29% and CSUSM is 67%–apparently not many applicants are concerned about the smell at Cal Poly.
I read that 95% of CSUSM students come from the local counties[Orange/Riverside/San Diego] while CPSLO is seen as a college town, though you may prefer SM if you want to be deep in SoCal.
Cal Poly SLO is an Agricultural school and the essence of cow can be found on some parts of campus but definitely not prevalent. As suggested above, you need to visit both schools and form your own opinion since which campus you attend is a very personal decision. Reputation wise, you cannot go wrong with SLO. Pick the school that fits you academically/financially and socially and you will be successful. So what major are you pursuing at each school?
According to my freshman son, you only smell the cows at Cal Poly if you go near the cows. He doesn’t smell anything in the dorms or in the campus core.
Besides, as someone who has lived off and on near agricultural areas, I can state with certainty that you go “nose-blind” to normal farm smells. Especially if they are at a distance.
