Any questions?

I have a few. I was admitted RD to columbia SEAS, and is deciding between that and Cornell engineering.
1. If I'm in SEAS, can I still take the pre-med or pre-business programs? How good are they compared to Cornell's? (It's okay if you don't answer the second part.)
2. How hard are the SEAS coruses?
3. How hard is it to transfer from SEAS to CC?

Is the atmosphere really "chilly and unfriendly" as I've heard it described? I just visited last weekend and I loved the school and the Core, but how are the people?

do laundry machines take dollars as well as quarters or are there change machines(that usually work) in the laundry rooms? also, detergent, you supply right? (some places are like 1.50$ but include detergent)

jegan -- not at all! Everyone I've come across -- students, faculty, even administrators have been helpful and friendly. Although we may not have the most school spirit (in terms of athletics), I think there is a definite sense of community (I think traditional events such as the Varsity Show and Orgo Night bring this aspect of Columbia out the most).

skraylor -- the easiest way to do laundry is to put some money into your Flex account (CU ID card to swipe); otherwise, bring many many quarters (no change machines, no dollars). And yes, you supply the detergent.

ontop of that laundry is $1 per washer and $1 per dryer and you can make change at the hartley help desk if you need quarters, though of course this would be really annoying if you dont live on the main quad.

Chase Manhattan or Citibank?

citibank...theres one in lerner and one on 111th street and u get free checking with $1500 balance or direct deposit.

Awesome.

Verizon or Cingular (or other)?

Verizon

Cingular or T-mobile

Sprint and Nextel dont work very well on campus.

Of course if price is an issue then go for the second choice...but with verizon you will have signal wherever you go on campus the other two have a bunch of annoying dead spots but you pay alot less.

Q: What do you recommend for foodstuffs on campus, and how much $$$ would you say you spend a month on eating out and transportation? On average that is... ballpark figure. I'm cheap, so I was just wondering...

bank of america? citibank? chase?

This is a mother, and I am already stressing out about how you move into a dorm in the middle of New York. Is it horrible?

My Experience:

Cellphone: I use T-Mobile, which hasn't failed me yet at Columbia (but I know there are better services out there).

Bank: Commerce for me (I've had an excellent experience with Commerece. When I was researching banks, Citibank and Chase had minimum requirements for free checking, which I didn't like, in case I went below the required levels). In order of proximity to campus: Citibank, Chase/Wash Mu, Commerce (which is still only about a 5-10 min walk). Find one that suits your needs.

Move-In: I thought move-in was very well organized. They provide big bins with wheels for your stuff (and students who help you move in), and they have convenient drop-off stations set up if you're coming in by car. I live only an hour away, so it was probably much easier for me than a west-coaster, say. Still, I don't think I heard anyone complain about too many difficulties.

hey..

yeah i got a commerce account for the fall. thanks for reassuring that it's good and only a short walk, i was just about to ask about it =P.

for cell phones.. does anyone know how good cingular is with service in dorms/everywhere?

i'v had cingular and tmobile....for dorms...JJ is tricky and you'll have a hard time finding a singal sometimes. Carmen is alot better and furnald was good, except for the 10th floor. its VERY hard to find a signal with either in butler though. Both work just fine at most of the dorms off the main campus.

I remember reading somewhere that there is this website to check out professors for different classes, and see how people rank them. Do you know the link?

culpa.info

Is a sprint phone a bad idea?which is the best?

What laptop is the best to buy?

How is Friday? I hear it is for internships-how does that work out for first years? Is it easy to get internship positions?

Be more specific:
1) paid or unpaid
2) what industry
3) summer or termtime
4) NYC or outside

I wouldn't count on spending the summer a floor below the rainbow room unless your parents are PE.
