Do Northerners feel a cultural divide at this Southern school? I'm all for us ladies dressing up for class and Southern gentlemen/hospitality. But I've heard that "Northern" is used by some at Wake to define someone's demeanor with a negative connotation. When I visited I also heard some really politically incorrect things said by some Wake students. It's a private school, but are northern students made to feel like "Yankees" here?

D (graduated in May) would say, “No.” She didn’t get into the whole “dressing for class” thing, either – that’s just not her style. She was never made to feel uncomfortable because of it, or because she’s a northerner. I believe the state with the 2nd most number of students at Wake is NJ.

I’ve been called a yankee before. Then again, CBBB is right – the 2nd most represented state here is New Jersey (North Carolina is first). Another highly represented state is Connecticut. Being from the North isn’t a huge deal … 99% of the people you’ll meet won’t really care.

You’re going to get light jabbing for being from Boston or Jersey, but that’d be true anywhere and is very light hearted.

I lived in a suite of 10 in Poteat House. None of us were from NC, three were from the Northeast, and two were from the West Coast.
