Curiosity about the Music/Ed Dept.

Hi! I'm a junior looking at UVM as a potential major in Music Ed there and I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the music department and the education department there. Not looking for any specific information, really. Just general information. I was also wondering if UVM rented out instruments or let students (say, horn players) borrow instruments from the school itself if the student doesn't actually own said instrument. My Band Director said that most schools do this and I was wondering if UVM also did. Thanks!

I can’t really speak from an insider’s point of view, since I’m still a senior in high school, but I was planning on going to UVM for Music Ed. However, I shadowed some people there and looked into their program and then decided perhaps Music Performance was the route for me. (I’m enrolled for this fall.) The Music Ed. program is very very structured, leaving you little time to do other things (say, a minor or to study abroad or even electives) for some people that might be okay but I wanted more freedom. I also got the vibe that they were very very close knit which has both it’s pros and cons. I can’t really tell you much about the department itself, but I’ve heard a lot of good things. I auditioned in their new performance hall and it was quite nice. I would suggest visiting, it’s really the only way to get a good feel for a school.
