Curly Hair

Okay, so yesterday I got a hair cut. I meant to get four inches off, because I wanted to get rid of my layers. Instead, she cut off about eight. I'm actually okay with it, because it still hits my shoulders. But I have curly hair, and she kept saying how dry it is. She told my I should scrunch it. Huh? What does that mean?

Also, how do you deal with curly, short hair? When my hair is long, if I brush it, the curls get less curly and go a bit wavy. But now my hair is SUPER curly, and like a little triangle around my head. Literally, my hair is two inches shorter when it is curly. How do I control this? I asked my RL friends, but none of them have curly hair.

I know how you feel…Personally, I have super curl & thick hair that normally goes out of control and crazy. It’s also prone to frizz and having bad hair days is the norm for me. However, what I LOVE about having curly hair is that it’s extremely versatile so that means that I can always try different styles and techniques with it …and it will hold better vs. having naturally pin straight hair.

Unlike you I put relaxer in my hair to help tame it for easier managability. I would recommend the following:

1) Invest in quality de-frizz, moisturizers & leave-in conditioner products for your hair.

2) Don’t flat iron your hair everyday…instead put in rollers in your hair before you go to bed so when you wake up you’ll have nice softer waves.

3) Use an intensive hair mask (the one you leave in for about 30 mins then wash out)…it REALLY helps because it helps make your hair appear shinier, softer & healthier.

I know it’s tough dealing with short & curly hair…but at least try to grow it somewhere around your shoulders (don’t forget to trim it ever 3-6weeks)…in the meantime you could try using accesories like headbands and clips to distract the attention away from your hair.

hope this helped…good luck! :)

I never flat iron my hair because it takes about 30 min and lasts for only 2 hours! What exactly is relaxer? And, how do you sleep with rollers? Aren’t they painful on the back of your head, lying on your pillow?

My hair is curly and about the same length as yours.

Scrunching is when you squeeze out the excess water from your hair in the shape of each individual curl, maybe adding some sort of defrizzing cream/curl holder/leave-in conditioner while doing so. That’s what I do and my curls stay nice. I actually like my hair shorter because the curls are more defined. When it’s long, I don’t really have wavy or curly hair, it’s just…ugh. Always let your hair air dry when you can.

You do that for each curl? How long does it take?

i have thick curly hair, and i recently got it cut, re-layered and thinned. It was already quite long though, so a couple inches off improved the curl. I’d say invest in a really good leave-in [i generally use a Biolage creme after i shower and then let my hair air-dry. if it’s frizzy i have organix serum that smells divine]. Don’t straighten your hair too much. i used to every day and it killed my hair. There are some good heat-protectants that help though.

If your hair’s really thick and tends to look triangular, ask your hairdresser to thin it. it works wonders.

relaxer is a chemical product that makes hair less curly; it’s generally used by african/african-american women that want straight[er] hair, as far as i know.

^^I kinda do it for each curl. Really mostly the ones in the front/on top, or I’ll group curls together. It’s usually no more than a few minutes. I’m sure I could make my hair nicer if I did each curl separately, but I’m lazy with my hair and I’ve found this to be fairly fast for the results.

@OP:

I think you would be an excellent candidate for the keratin hair treatment aka brazilian hair straightener.

^Don’t give into people who want you to straighten your hair, OP. Curly hair is better.

Don’t give into people who want to make you feel bad for wanting to straighten your hair…

anyway, one of my friends got the brazilian hair treatment. it does eventually wear off [in a couple months], but she said she liked it and is considering getting it again. I’ve been debating it as well…

^ you should get it!!! I’m trying to save up money so I get it…my cousin got it done and her hair looks AMAZING…it’s super soft, shiny and healthy look…and thick…

yeah it fades aways vs. growing out (i think) but when u get it done you can’t tie back your hair for 3-4 days or you’d mess it up :/

keratin hair treatment ftw!!! but of course check with your hairdresser before you make the decision :D

Thanks Longsx3! I think I have 3a and 3b curls… I’m going to use some of the products they recommend.

Don’t brush your hair. Comb it when wet, thats it.

Curly hair is sexy.

Use DevaCurl! It’s a little more expensive, but it’s so worth it. I use the low-poo shampoo and the conditioner. Amazing for my curls!

Right now I use Herbal Essences Hello Hydration, but I’ll definitely check out DevaCurl. I’ve never heard of low-poo shampoo…
