Currant MT Student Answering Questions!

ask me questions! I wish I had help when deciding colleges so let me know what you want to know (:

funny, I was thinking about MM when I went to go check the forums and saw there was a new post. i’m auditioning for the school march 9th  how are you liking it so far? i’ve got a friend in the program and he enjoys it for the most part. one thing i’ve been curious about though: I know my friend is doing BA but with the minor in musical theatre. and he tells me the minor is like a major in itself and demanding and stuff. is it possible (if you get accepted) to do the acting bfa and the musical theatre minor? you can also tell me anything interesting you’ve been through this year. i don’t know haha sorry if i’m asking so much, don’t really know too much about the school.

I’m actually in love with the program. The classes are challenging yet nurturing at the same time. My only complaint is there isn’t enough performance opportunities, but lucky enough they are adding a Freshman showcase this year! The minor is like a major for sure! They get the most credits for a program. The BFA is possible but only like 4 people in each MT class do it. It is very demanding as you have an acting class all 4 years and freshman year you have a very challenging movement class. The BFA is for people who are also interested in more classical acting training. ALSO you don’t get a chance to do more electives in you junior and senior year because there are more required courses. MMC is big into exploring different majors and what not: aka you have to take a stagecraft class for a semester and work backstage on a show for 60 hours which is very demanding, and the BA is very accommodating to that. Also if you are interested in double majoring the BA gives you a better chance to do so. Each has it’s plus and minuses it’s just they normally don’t let people into the BFA with an MT minor. The people who are in it now are phenomenal actors and actresses who have a better chance of doing classical acting. Some are okay singers and some are great it just depends on what program they see you flourishing in. the MT minor is demanding because of Daily Dance at 9 every morning (WARNING). It’s fun though and for a non-dancer like me, it was perfect. HMMMMM anything interesting, I guess getting to meet so many wonderful people and they have a MT club at my school and I got far in some callbacks for two of the shows and as a freshman I was very blessed to have that happen and I learned a lot form those callbacks. I got a perform a decade of MT for my MT history class which was a complete blast! I had soooo much fun. I learned to become a more independent person from living in NYC and learned how to become a more natural and truthful actress. I learned the Sweet Charity Aloof dance. I got to see 4 Broadway shows at student discounts for 80 bucks total. I camped out in central park. These are all the exciting things I can think of, sorry if not many pertain to the school. Let me know if you have anymore questions (-:

^^^ Thanks so much for this info. Could you tell us what the 1st year of training at MMC has been like? Is the training the typical basic (walk on the grid, be water, be a tree, etc) type classes or is there deeper study such as the truth of the character and scene study? Do you know what I mean? Also, have you been happy with the voice coaching? Thanks for your time!!

Hello! i recieved a letter on monday from MMC telling me that i have been placed on the waitlist. honestyly, what are my chances of actually getting in and is there ANYTHING i can do to better my chances…?

waitlisted for the BA theatre arts with a concentration in performance and a musical theatre minor.

like bwayhereicome I was also put on the waitlist for the Theater BA concentration in performance with a musical theatre minor. Marymount is also my number one school and ive dreaming of going there since I was a little girl. Any advice on how to get off the waitlist and into the program? or any people that I should talk to?

honestly, I could be wrong, but I don’t think there’s anything you can do. when you’re put on a waitlist, it basically means you’re placed in a group of kids from which the school will accept if anyone they primarily accepted declines their offer. there are definitely a lot of people that do decline though and so you definitely shouldn’t think it’s over. being on the waitlist means there’s still hope. it wasn’t a no. :)

@HopefulMT2017 My daughter was placed on the wait list last summer for Theatre program. She decided she wanted to go to MMC anyway, even if she didn’t get off the wait list, as an art major, because her intention was to re-audition this year again for MT. Unexpectedly, one evening, when we had maybe a week before we were to head up to NYC, she received a phone call welcoming her into the theatre dept. she was accepted for the BFA in Acting for 2012-2013 year. Just last month she auditioned on March 17 for Musical Theatre and got her acceptance letter on Monday, so next year she will be doing the BFA in Acting with Musical Theatre minor. She’s very excited. It took her a little extra time to get what she wanted, but she thinks it worked out for the best. She felt much more relaxed at the audition, because she new kids there and her advisor was there. She also felt more prepared and felt the acting classes she’s been taking helped her. She was able to get a couple of needed basic classes out of the way this first year, so now she’s ready to throw herself into acting and singing.

appasi- Congratulations to your daughter! My son has been accepted into the BFA acting program at MMC for the fall. Could you tell me how living in NYC has been for your daughter? The dorms, costs, etc. We are making a final decision in the next week or so and would appreciate any information you could give on the freshman experience at MMC. Thanks!

cjenny2- Congrats to your son! We live in a small town so I was worried about my daughter living so far away in NYC, but it has turned out to be a wonderful experience for her and she loves it there.
She lives in the 55th street residence hall and the rooms are tiny but has a fantastic view of Manhattan. She’s in a two bedroom suite, with two girls per room, a bathroom and a tiny kitchen, and has had no problems with her roommates, they all get along beautifully. Because we live in Texas, my daughter took only what could fit in two suitcases, so we had to buy a few things when we got there (sheets, towels, a rug, a few dishes, etc.). In their building there is a little store where they can purchase some food, snacks, necessities, and there is a medical clinic right in the building. I love that because my daughter has been sick a couple of times with a cold, then the flu, and she only had to get on the elevator to see a doctor and get a prescription and there is a Duane Reade drug store right next door to the residence hall. They even bandaged up her blistered feet for her after too much walking in new shoes!
My daughter found a job soon after she got there at an Urban Outfitters that is walking distance from the school. She only works two days a week, but it keeps her in pocket money. She has enjoyed all her classes and she likes that the class sizes are small. All in all she’s had a very good experience up there, now we just have to figure out how to get all the stuff she’s bought since she’s been up there, home for the summer. I guess we’ll be keeping UPS busy.

congrats to your D appasi! must be very exciting to see everything she worked for pay off. I got accepted for MT last week as well and i’m almost positive i’m attending. while at the audition, I really felt like it was the school for me. the faculty were just wonderful and my friend and I felt like we were home. congrats to your son as well cjenny2!

apperently we will know by may 15th, so i guess all we can do is wait it out and see what happens!

Hello! So I found out about a month ago that I have been accepted into BFA acting and the MT minor (Yay!) How many BFA acting students are in the program? I’ll be visiting the school this month. What are the major pros and cons to the program? I have been wait listed at NYU and will most likely be enrolling to MMC. Can you give me some of your personal experiences with your time at Marymount? Thank you!

I found out a few weeks ago I was waitlisted for MMC. I decided today that I wanna go there, so hopefully we find out by May 15 or sooner if we were accepted or not! Does anyone know the chances of being accepted off of the waitlist?

I just received my phone call saying I’ve been offered a spot in the BA in Theatre Arts with a Concentration in Theatre Performance! I couldn’t be happier!

I was just wondering, does this include the Musical Theatre Minor as well? or is it just for the Major?

I applied and was accepted to MMC, but my major will be Theatre Arts Technical Design and production. While all my time during HS and even before I was focused on performance, I am interested in a double major with Communications and am really interested in the design aspect. MMC was my first choice through the whole process so I am super excited and just can’t wait. I am a little nervous, however, about being matched with roommates. The housing application asked very general questions. To the OP, how were you matched with your roommates and how did it all work out?

i just got off the waiting list too! im attending in the fall wooooo

and they told me on the phone that they havent gotten to the musical theatre minor waiting list yet, just the theatre performance. but we should hear soon if we will have a spot in the musical theater minor. fingers crossed! either way, im happy =)

Yeah, I called back cause I missed the phone call and they told me the same thing! But I’m attending Marymount in the fall too!

Hopefully we get spots in the Musical Theatre Minor too! But i’m so excited!!
