Marymount Auditon Questions

I am very interested in auditioning for MMM, but I have a few questions.
A) Do you have to be in BFA Theater Performance to pursue Musical Theater Minor, or can you be in BA Acting Program? I’ve tried to find this out, but I have had many different answers.
B) For those that have auditioned already, any monologue suggestions? Any song suggestions? That would be greatly appreciated.
C) For those who have been accepted, how long was it untill you found out? What program/programs? Did you confirm? Congrats!

Thanks guys!

Sweetheart Kel

You can do the MT Minor with the BA Theater (must audition for that). I advised someone last year who is now attending for that program and preferred a BA degree.

You can audition and be considered for either the BFA or the BA with the MT Minor.

Thank you very much for answering my questions.
:)

MMC has a list of suggested monologues right on their site:

http://marymount.mmm.edu/study/programs/dfpa/theatrearts/monologues.html

Hi, I am just all over the place on this musical theatre forum trying to find a place to land. I think this might be it. I am auditioning in January at MMC and at Pace. I am currently a freshman in a small musical theatre program that focuses more on dance than voice and acting. My vocals and acting are stronger and I want to live in NYC so I have chosen MMC, Pace and NYU.
Now I just need one of them to choose me! I have been accepted as a fall '08 transfer student at MMC. Waiting to hear from Pace and just now started the NYU packet. At my current college we wore nice dresses and then changed to dance attire. Don't see that as necessary at MMC, but it is an all day class type audition so is a nice dress appropriate for that? Love the idea of group type auditions, but I'm a little nervous about what to expect from those competing in the group. For veterans of MMC auditions, were the other auditioners nice and respectful? Should I be aware of anything that I'm not thinking about? ha I hope that made sense.

So apparently they have dance auditions for the MT minor now? That's what I was told from someone who auditioned on the 17th. However there is nothing on their website about it!

ActressToBe - Prior to you monologue/vocal audition, there is a really basic dance audition at MMC nothing to particularly worry about. It is very short (not even an hour).
blank slate - As I am sure you know, each program you mention in NYU is really different. The group audition bit for MMC actually feels more like a class "without being corrected"; your name gets called, you do your stuff, you sit back down :) It is probably most practical to wear your dance clothes underneath your regular clothes, but there is time to change from what I gather.

yup. i went to the audition on 17th. you go and you sign in and there is an hour information session that is actually really helpful. They do an amazing job of explaining the program and like how many ppl they accept. then they seperate the musical theatre minors and the bfa in acting. once you do that they seperate the MT ppl into two groups alphabetically. you have time to change and then you dance. If you have at least one dance class youll be fine, it was pretty easy. i wouldnt worry about that. then you are taken to another room after you change back, and they walk you through a quick warm up. then each person goes up and sings first, some ppl sang two 16bars and some ppl sang one. then you did your monologue, and they cut you off after 2 min. there were only two ppl watching. It was pretty easy going, we were all really nervous but the ppl were really nice. i hope all this helps! Good luck!!!

Broadwaybaby: Did they have people only sing one 16 bar cut for time, or was it their own choice?

yea it was basically your choice. some people opted to only sing one. i sang both of mine, i was a little nervous bc hey only said to sing two if you had a head voice and belt and the songs showed the two voices. mine were both belt but different dramatically. but it was fine, if they don't sop you you might as well get as much time up there as you can. i'd say more than half the room sang two songs but its totally your choice.

broadwaybaby,
how many students are accepted for the Theatre program or MT minor? I going to audition im Febuary i think. I'm really nervous! Was everyone amazing that auditioned with you?

yea everyone was really good. but everyone was so nice so they werent intimidating. dont be nervous! i dont no you but im sure your amazing haha. they take 50 for the BfA in acting and 50 for the BA/Mt minor. and they said there are about 900 ppl who are auditiong. 50 doesnt sound like a lot and it has me nervous, but ppl have been telling me thats actually a big program so who knows. lol. What are you singing?

Well, i'm still not exactly sure what to sing. Aren't you suppose to sing something before the 1970's? that's what's messing me up! haha. I was thinking..

Astonishing from Little Women
I Speak Six Languages
Something from Once Upon A Mattress?
ugh I don't know! Any suggestions? Do you know of anything that is really overdone?

I speak Six Languages is very difficult to sync up with an accompanist without a rehearsal first. Do you get to rehearse with your accompanist ahead of time at Marymount?

As far as something prior to 1970 -- that usually means that they want to hear something from more classic musical theatre rep -- ex. Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Lowe, Loesser, Styne, Kander and Ebb, Herman, Bernstein, Porter, Berlin, etc...

Thanks for your help KatMT! Are you audition for MMC?

Listen to KatMT's advice. She is the head of a Musical Theater program at another college!

First, I would not sing Astonishing. While it is a great song, it is quite overdone in BFA auditions. A client of mine just mentioned wanting to sing it and I told her the same thing. That's two of you right there. In fact, she is also applying to MM! I also would not do I Speak Six Languages for the reasons Kat mentioned.

Kat mentioned composers from traditional musical theater with songs from pre 1970. However, MM has NO requirement that your songs must be pre 1970. I do not see that on their audition requirements. Some of your other schools may want that but this school doesn't, to my knowledge.

It is impossible to suggest songs without knowing your skills and type. Perhaps if you were very very specific about your skills, strengths, type, etc. and even provided songs you sing well, others could suggest songs of a certain kind that are worth looking at. That's hard to do without knowing you but might set you off in a direction to listen to sound clips of those songs and to choose some that might be suitable for you and then get the sheet music and run those songs with your voice teacher and get a live opinion as to which one is most appropriate that sells you.

thank you so much for your help! I had no idea that Astonishing was over done! Do you know if All Shook Up is overdone? My school just did that show and I was Miss Sandra in it, if that helps. Again thank you!

All Shook up is not overdone but I do not think the songs from that show are appropriate for a BFA in MT audition (which is why they are not overdone!). That show is a revue of existing songs, isn't it? It's a jukebox type musical with songs that are not from the MT canon, if I am correct. It has songs like Heartbreak Hotel and Blue Suede Shoes in it. You need to pick songs written for musicals by musical theater composers (that is a broad generalization, I realize). The songs in All Shook Up are not written for a musical and are not really MT songs themselves.

I suggested in my prior post a process you might want to undertake in terms of getting help. You also need to familiarize yourself with MT songs and shows and just listen to a LOT of them....listen to clips on Amazon or ITunes. Share with others your voice type, strengths, etc. and which songs you already sing well and maybe they can suggest others of a certain type which may not fit you just right as they don't know you via the internet but it would be a starting point and once you find songs that are appropriate for you, run through them with your voice teacher in person and see which one suit you the best.

Sorry hannahw89 if I gave erroneous information about Marymount and the pre- 1970s requirement. I was responding to your statement about a pre-1970s song being required.

I agree with Soozie that All Shook Up might not show the most off in terms of musical theatre repertory. I agree as well that you might want to listen to many musicals to get a sense of material that will show you off well in auditions.

Good Luck!!

BroadwayBaby: I could have sworn I heard that for the MT minor they only take like 15 kids a year. So is that 50 number for the BA in Theatre performance or have they upped the number of spots? Because I'm sure more kids get in the BA Performance degree program than into the MT minor and BFA Acting programs. Perhaps I heard wrong.
