Current Bruins Taking Questions! (Housing, Campus Life, Majors, etc.)

tmobile isn’t too bad, it works fine for me in de neve dogwood and cedar, i normally can get 4 or 3 bars but I think being on the top floor might help a bit  anyone know which one has the best signal in sproul? since im switching phones/plans so might as well pick a good one for next year:)

Hi i’m considering going to UCLA, but i’m curious about grade deflation/inflation. i have to maintain a minimum 3.3 gpa to continue receiving a local scholarship and i am curious whether you’ve noticed a trend of deflation of grades in any of your classes, or if anyone you know complains of it.

It varies from professor to professor. Almost all of them use a standard curve but differ in where they set the average. Most of the time it’s at a B-..

[EDIT]Also, there’s no such thing as grade inflation at UCLA, haha. (I speak only on behalf of south campus majors, btw)

Grade inflation? Generally, no (as a N. Campus major). Deflation? South campus…

Is there any reason for me to turn in my housing deposit early since UCLA operates on a ‘lottery system’ and doesn’t give preference to students who turn in their housing apps early?

^
no, i dont think there are any benefits to turn in the housing app early. except its already the 21st, so it isnt exactly early anymore. haha

if i am planning to switch to the engineering department as soon as i get there, should i apply for the honors program (i already have the required high school class rank)? if i do, and i do get into the engineering program, will i still have to take the honors courses?

undeclared –> business economics

how hard?

i don’t think engineers can do anything honors related unless you double major or something… well thats what the OCs told us… being in engineering school is an honor :(

Housing question:

I’m debating whether to put suites above halls or vice versa (plaza will be my first choice). I know halls are more social, but i don’t wanna get stuck in a hall triple, and i’ll still meet people through clubs and intermurals that I plan to partake in.

Also, anyone know the difference between “double (two occupants)” and “double (shared bathroom)” choices? especially w/regards to plazas?

Lastly, if you request a suite are the odds of you rooming with a non-freshman high, or do they try and group the frosh together?

any insight is appreciated  thanks!

i think double two occupants means rooms in de neve and some of sunset village where you have your private bathroom just for your room, and double shared is shared between 2 rooms which include rieber terrance and vista, hedrick summit and some of sunset village…

ohh, ok, i thought that might be what it was, but just needed clarification. so thanks! any insight on the suites v hall question posed above… ;)

if you really don’t want a hall triple, don’t put halls first. some people aren’t cut out for halls, and as you said, halls aren’t the be-all end-all for being social. so if you don’t want to live there, don’t sign up for it!

Question: how do you prevent yourself from getting burnt out at the end of your second-year especially when you have an entire full summer quarter coming up, you’re trying to get out of here as quickly as possible to reduce tuition costs, and you have absolutely no idea what you want to do in the future but you’re at least certain that you don’t want to go to law school (unlike every other N. Campus major supposedly) because you want to have a balanced and happy life in the future? And also consider that your resume is underdeveloped and that you’re “behind” but at least you’re smart and you do well in school despite being depressed right now? Or how about if you’re feeling particularly misanthropic and possibly self-loathing and you can’t stand the majority of your peers on campus and you simply don’t want to be a student right now and you want to drop all of your classes and go home and take time off to get a real job or something for awhile so that you can appreciate your privileged position? Thanks.

^ go to bed.

seriously. i should too. goddamn 22 units :(

Oh woe is me, too. I’m in the unfortunate position of being enrolled in 153L right now. :(

:|

Sorry if this has been answered before, but how hard is it to get into Honors and what does it depend on? Would someone with not amazing stats be accepted if their essay was good?

At least you’re not taking 30CL. Imagine 30BL, but with twice the Bacherness.

mmk, thanks liyana! think i got a plan now ;)

does anybody know how the financial aid works for the fsp program?
