Current Bruins Taking Questions! (Housing, Campus Life, Majors, etc.)

Firstly, congratulations!

Current second-year. North Campus (Humanities & Social Sciences). Fairly knowledgeable about how things work here. More than happy to help in any way I can. So...

Ask away. :)

for engineering....is there a seperate quad like special housing were there will be a lot of other engineers or is everyone all mixed up despite their major?

There isn't special housing by major. If anything, the campus is mostly divided along Bruin Walk (an arbitrary walkway/pathway that leads from the dorms to the other side of the campus) between North and South Campus. North is characterized by Romanesque architecture. Humanities and social sciences majors and classes are concentrated there. South is characterized by box-like buildings. Science, math, and engineering majors tend to take classes there.

i'll take the pleasure of answering any south campus (science major) questions if u baby bruins have some!

It's a bit silly that only a year previous I might've answered some of yours, bannana. I am... going to be a third-year...

What do you guys know about the English department? :D Thankss.

is there an engineering floor in any of the dorms cause i know at usc they have one for women//..

What do you want to know about the English department?

In general, it doesn't have as many class requirements as other majors. English and History - it's not uncommon to see them doubled. Or, to see English with a minor. The thing with the English major is, you start off with English 3 and then English 4W (go to UCLA Registrar's Office Home and look up the courses). They're essentially introductory writing courses that span the gamut from writing about poetry to plays to an actual novel (it depends on your instructor).

Next, you take the English 10A-10B-10C series - C depends upon completing B upon completing A. You can start 10A only after taking 4W. In general, it spans British and American literature from Chaucer... to... god knows who. Whatever, it's comprehensive and you use the Norton Anthology of Literature.

The upper-division courses are divided by major playwright/author etc. Shakespeare, Milton, et al. Go to UCLA Department of English

I can't say much other than what's on the website. I've tasted 4W and have actually owned the Norton Anthology... for fun. . . it's considered a rite of passage to the major/department, if you will.

There isn't special housing by major.**

I kno mmelin! how crazy is that! I can't believe that this time last year i was in their excited position!

Is it really that crowded like everyone says it is?

most of the times you wont notice the crowdedness unless your in powell during finals week, walking down bruin walk at rush hour, registering for classes, or eating at the dining halls during theme dinner

do you know what happened to the dead dude at the pool?

How does the major/minor thing work? I'm a major in Bio, and I want to minor in Spanish. <3

Also... just how competitive is the school itself? xD;;

Latter question is too subjective.

Former: you work on lower-divs for your interested fields. At some point, once you've taken a certain #of courses of specific courses, you can declare the major and/or minor.

grateful that the "when will admissions decisions come out?!" threads ended

Anyways, I'm a 2nd-year Psychobiology major (South Campus, biological sciences), so I can help with that. I can also help in research jobs, etc.

Welcome to UCLA (but it's still Finals week for me).

"do you know what happened to the dead dude at the pool?"

from what i heard, he broke into sunset rec after hours with his fraternity (alcohol was had). they pulled the tarps back a tiny bit and he went swimming but got trapped under the tarp and drowned. from what everyone told me he was an amazing guy who did a lot for the school. its really sad..

oh and i'm a first year history major and would love to answer any questions that you have...

side-topic: which courses are you doing next quarter ktcv

mme-lin don't confuse the poor new bruins with side topics. must not encourage thread hijacking!!!

2nd-year psych major here... thinking of switching to psychobio (hi jinobi)... yah. also i'm in the honors program and UCLA colorguard, if anyone has band questions and such.
