Current Deerfield Student: Ask Away

Can anyone (a current student) provide me with the exact specific model of the Mac they’re giving? I’m basically just waiting for my current (crappy) school to end, and I like to spend my free time online making a list of things to buy and things to research. I’ve always been Pro-PC, so that means I have absolutely no idea how to use a Mac. This would be a really good subject to waste my time researching :P…

I asked this question when visiting… And the answer is that their Macs are given out because DA puts specific programs onto them. Oh! And there is some sort of technology fee which could be decreased depending on your financial aid grant.

@dang are you going to be a freshmen?

Nope, Class of '14

The PC crowd quickly adapt to the Macs. Some new students (and also some older students who were around when the school used Windows PCs) might also have PCs in addition to the school issued Mac, but, eventually predominantly use the Mac. Our child adapted quickly to the Mac, even though having multiple Windows PCs prior to DA. I wouldn’t worry about it.
The school will (understandably) only support Macs or PCs they issue.

Oh okay, thanks! I’m not exactly hardcore PC, it’s just I’ve never used Safari or iTunes or anything like that. Haha

@deerbri,
How about you?

I’m class of 2015 and I couldn’t be more excited!!!

@deerfieldhungry: there are no clothing stores in walking distance. Greenfield is the nearest town, about 5 miles away, and there’s not much shopping there. There are buses to the nearest mall, but that’s not every week either. Best bet is to order online and get it delivered to DA. Not sure what you mean by ‘formal, warm clothes’; each kid has different tolerances for the cold. A few will wear shorts year round. Some will just wear their blazers in the winter. There’s also 2 shops in the school for most things you might need, albeit all the clothing will have the school logo or name. No heavy/warm jackets though [except for some athletic teams].

@deerbri: No easy answer whether to take history or philo/rel first. Not sure if it really matters. All the courses are topnotch [same can be said for DA’s peer schools too]. If in doubt, contact the academic deans.

Response to deerbri Post #17:

It depends. If you are are a strong student and feel you will adjust to new place, surroundings, dorm life then take the history. This will lighten the load in the sophomore year when you will have a higher level of math, science and language courses. On the other hand if you are concerned about initial adjustment, take Phil/rel course to give yourself time to settle in.

Ok thank you for people who replied :slight_smile: well the laptop thing kinda sucks considering the fact that my mom just bought me a new pc laptop that was very expensive and I don’t think I’ll want to let go of it :frowning: and I feel so confused by the humanities and philosophy and religion courses, can anyone explain that or just give me a link where its explained?

@plainjane23: The courses are explained in the Course of Study booklet. Its also online on DANet. If you need more explanation, contact the deans. Some religion classes are considered harder than some history classes, so its not a clear cut choice. Although I suppose that’ll also depend on the particular student’s strengths.

@alextwoofour thank you

Dear @DAgrad,
I am interested in Deerfield and have a few questions for you :slight_smile:

 1. What other schools did u apply to other than deerfield (where were u accepted) and why did u chose deerfield?
 2. About how many hours of homework do you have each night?
 3. Is Deerfield really hard? Is it hard to get good grades? are you in the top of your class? and how much harder is it than ur old middle schoolschool (did u go to a public or private school)?
