ohxwowxlovely, there is always something to do. Whether or not a person wants to do that thing is debatable. Winter term there were buses to Northhampton, ski trips, dances, and so on. But some weekends the most attractive option is just hanging out with friends at the Greer. The weekends where I’m bored are my most productive. xD

deerfieldhungry, all new students get a Macbook. If you are a three or four year student, you keep it after graduation. (New juniors return it after graduation.)

pulsar and zdoub99, The thread has been open for a little under 35 hours. There’s no need to bump it.

pulsar, it depends on your teachers. My maths teacher gives homework every single night consistently. But my philosophy teacher alternates a weekend of heavy reading with a couple of journal entries during the week. I honestly can’t give you a straight answer aside from that I average 3 hours a night, total.

CKSABS, I was actually hoping to keep this separate from the Deerfield thread. I wanted this to be a slightly less cluttered and more efficient place to ask questions about DA; not necessarily a place for idle chatter.

1. Why did you choose DA?
Out of all the schools I applied to, Deerfield was my favorite. I liked the way I felt on campus, the location, the size, and the academic and co-curricular options.
2. What grade are you in?
I’m a sophomore.
3. What do you like most about DA?
The freedom everything here gives me. I can’t really describe it. There are man different Deerfield experiences, and you have to find which one fits you. That hasn’t always been an option for me.
4. What is your biggest surprise after going to DA?
Eh, I haven’t had much to surprise me. Just remember that boarding school still has many of the flaws of the real world.
5. What is your biggest disappointment after going to DA?
Again, not many of these. It’s just an imperfect place, like everywhere else. Sometimes people, myself included, complain about things, but if it wasn’t one thing it would be another.
6. What clubs/ECs are you in?
I’m part of a lot of clubs, but my favorites are Archery, Asian Students Association, and Gay Straight Alliance.
7. What are the academic tracks available regular, accelerated, honors?
Definitely check out contentsunknown’s link for this one. I could explain it all but there’s so much to cover.
8. What are the teachers like? inspiring? accessible?
I like all of my teachers on a personal level. And I feel like I could talk to them about anything at all. Before DA, if I got criticism on an assignment, it was usually minute details that I didn’t think were entirely relevant. But now I feel rather safe in my teacher’s hands. I know that if I just let my teachers teach me, I’ll be better for it.
9. If you are not from NE, what do you think of the weather?
This year we got a lot of snow, but I’m from a similar climate so it’s not shocking.
10. How are the students? friendly, cliquey? privileged?
I call them “groups” rather than “cliques” simply because to me the idea of a clique implies a lack of openness. There are definitely groups of people, but it’s more of a thing of convenience than anything else; you can’t hang out with every single person every day. To put it simply, people are kind to one another. :]
11. How much homework do you have each night?
I have about three hours every night and maybe one more on the weekends. I think every school plays up their course load a bit.
12. What courses do you take as a freshman?
English I and Physics I(A) are the only guaranteed classes for Freshmen, if you even take a science freshman year. Most of them do. Physics I can be regular or accelerated. From there, you have math, language or ESL, and a history. A history must be taken freshman or sophomore year, and I recommend doing it as a freshman. Then there are one-term art and philosophy classes, but they’re not mandatory for freshmen.
