Current Deerfield Student: Ask Away

Ello guys, with all the admissions craziness happening right now, I figured this thread could be handy. Perspective parents or students feel free to ask about Deerfield and my experiences there. I'm hoping some other DA students on here will answer also, but can I make no promises.

Please don't ask if you should go to one school or another. No one but your self can answer that question for you. I'm not here to tell you whether or not you should join us here.

As the title says, ask away. :]

Is there a lot to do on weekends? I’m a bit nervous about how rural it is, thats an aspect I both like and dislike.

All of pulsar’s questions and 13. How did you decide to choose Deerfield over the other schools you were accepted at?

zdoub, That was my question#1.

…fail

bump…

bump…

Just to double check, does Deerfield give macbooks for incoming freshmen and sophmores?

Hey guys, thought I’d take a stab at this…

  1. Why did you choose DA?
I really liked the (as cliche as it sounds), family and community feel, I thought it was the perfect size for a school, not to big or small, and I liked that it seems like a high school. Andover and Exeter were too big and college-like and I felt like I wouldn’t be able to connect to the student body the way I would at DA.
  2. What grade are you in?
    I’m a new sophomore.
  3. What do you like most about DA?
My hall is really fantastic and I really like my dorm resident, who’s also my advisor.
  4. What is your biggest surprise after going to DA?
I came from a junior boarding school with a significantly larger percentage of international students, and I was expecting something along the same lines at Deerfield, and DA has a smaller percentage (but still quite a lot). It’s different but also nice in a way because there’s less of a language barrier and culture barrier among students and diversity is much greater than at my old school among students from different parts of the US.
  5. What is your biggest disappointment after going to DA?
I think you probably want something about the school, but personally, it was that I didn’t keep in touch with my friends from home. Deerfield is, for the most part, what I thought it would be, but that may just be because I went in with a relatively informed view.
  6. What clubs/ECs are you in?
I’m in ballroom dancing club, French club, ASA (Asian Students Ass.), Young Democrats, Amnesty, and Debate.
7. What are the academic tracks available regular, accelerated, honors?
It really depends on the subject. Departments have course maps with tracks though: http://danet.deerfield.edu/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/Departmental_Course_Maps_201101.pdf
8. What are the teachers like? inspiring? accessible?
Definitely. I can confidently say that I have the best teachers I’ve ever had in my life. The real difference is how much they love their subject and more than that, love teaching it. I’ve had teachers with more advanced degrees in their subjects, but have been lousy at teaching, here though, teachers just care so much for what they do.
  9. If you are not from NE, what do you think of the weather?
From NE, sorry. It’s actually warmer in the Deerfield valley than it is where I’m from, in Eastern MA, though.
  10. How are the students? friendly, cliquey? privileged?
The students are very friendly, very accessible, I was honestly worried going in because of a certain reputation I had heard about surrounding DA students, but I was completely taken aback by how genuine and kind everyone is. There are groups, but they often revolve around just where people are from or what sport they play more than anything, you hang out with the people you see the most, just like anywhere else.
  11. How much homework do you have each night?
I have about two to three hours if I’m economical about time management.
  12. What courses do you take as a freshman?
I wasn’t a freshman, but if you check out the course maps and see where you’d start, you can probably get a pretty good idea. You take a math placement test and if you’re taking French or Spanish, you’ll take a placement for that too.

Deerfield gives macbooks to all new students as far as I know.

There’s tons to do on the weekends, Deerfield really isn’t that rural at all, there are mall trips and movie trips and Northampton trips, and you can always take a cab into Greenfield for dinner or a movie. There are also lots of fun things around campus to do as well, dances and events, like the sophomore lock-in this winter, and of course you can watch a game or something. I also go to yoga on Sunday afternoons sometimes.

CU, Thanks. Which courses have the most work: English, History, Math, or Science? Do History and English classes have a lot of term papers and projects?

CKSABS, I’ll move the contents to the Deerfield thread after this conversation is complete.

bump…

ohxwowxlovely, there is always something to do. Whether or not a person wants to do that thing is debatable. Winter term there were buses to Northhampton, ski trips, dances, and so on. But some weekends the most attractive option is just hanging out with friends at the Greer. The weekends where I’m bored are my most productive. xD

deerfieldhungry, all new students get a Macbook. If you are a three or four year student, you keep it after graduation. (New juniors return it after graduation.)

pulsar and zdoub99, The thread has been open for a little under 35 hours. There’s no need to bump it.

pulsar, it depends on your teachers. My maths teacher gives homework every single night consistently. But my philosophy teacher alternates a weekend of heavy reading with a couple of journal entries during the week. I honestly can’t give you a straight answer aside from that I average 3 hours a night, total.

CKSABS, I was actually hoping to keep this separate from the Deerfield thread. I wanted this to be a slightly less cluttered and more efficient place to ask questions about DA; not necessarily a place for idle chatter.

1. Why did you choose DA?
Out of all the schools I applied to, Deerfield was my favorite. I liked the way I felt on campus, the location, the size, and the academic and co-curricular options.
2. What grade are you in?
I’m a sophomore.
3. What do you like most about DA?
The freedom everything here gives me. I can’t really describe it. There are man different Deerfield experiences, and you have to find which one fits you. That hasn’t always been an option for me.
4. What is your biggest surprise after going to DA?
Eh, I haven’t had much to surprise me. Just remember that boarding school still has many of the flaws of the real world.
5. What is your biggest disappointment after going to DA?
Again, not many of these. It’s just an imperfect place, like everywhere else. Sometimes people, myself included, complain about things, but if it wasn’t one thing it would be another.
6. What clubs/ECs are you in?
I’m part of a lot of clubs, but my favorites are Archery, Asian Students Association, and Gay Straight Alliance.
7. What are the academic tracks available regular, accelerated, honors?
Definitely check out contentsunknown’s link for this one. I could explain it all but there’s so much to cover.
8. What are the teachers like? inspiring? accessible?
I like all of my teachers on a personal level. And I feel like I could talk to them about anything at all. Before DA, if I got criticism on an assignment, it was usually minute details that I didn’t think were entirely relevant. But now I feel rather safe in my teacher’s hands. I know that if I just let my teachers teach me, I’ll be better for it.
9. If you are not from NE, what do you think of the weather?
This year we got a lot of snow, but I’m from a similar climate so it’s not shocking.
10. How are the students? friendly, cliquey? privileged?
I call them “groups” rather than “cliques” simply because to me the idea of a clique implies a lack of openness. There are definitely groups of people, but it’s more of a thing of convenience than anything else; you can’t hang out with every single person every day. To put it simply, people are kind to one another. :]
11. How much homework do you have each night?
I have about three hours every night and maybe one more on the weekends. I think every school plays up their course load a bit.
12. What courses do you take as a freshman?
English I and Physics I(A) are the only guaranteed classes for Freshmen, if you even take a science freshman year. Most of them do. Physics I can be regular or accelerated. From there, you have math, language or ESL, and a history. A history must be taken freshman or sophomore year, and I recommend doing it as a freshman. Then there are one-term art and philosophy classes, but they’re not mandatory for freshmen.

Thanks.

Hey is there a formal supply list for Deerfield? And are there shops near Deerfield where I can get formal, warm clothes?

As an incoming freshmen…is it best to take history or phil./religion first?

Hi
I have 3 questions. Does applying for financial aid decrease your chances of getting in? Are the dorms nice? And how many people have roommates?

Thanks.

what humanities classes would you recommend? how about art classes that are pass/fail? thanks!

I asked this in the Deerfield thread but I’ll ask it here just in case too. So since the school gives all the students a mac does the student pay for it or maybe its included in tuition? what if the student (me) already has a laptop but its not a mac can I use that one or are we required to use macs?
