current freshman answering questions

feel free to reply on this thread or pm me with any questions you have about student life at tulane!! :) just do NOT ask me about your chances because idk

Hi i was just admitted into Tulane, and academically it would be a great option for me. However, I’m worried about how I would mesh with the student body at Tulane, is everyone super beautiful and super stuck up? I know thats a reputation, but I would like to hear a student’s perspective.

Kat1234: My S is a freshman at Tulane. He is an above average student (as almost everyone at Tulane is) and loves sports. He is friendly with those who are studious, athletic, and he tries to assist those who may not be as socially accepted to fit in. I have been to Tulane 5 times since his acceptance and I have seen so many great students and they all seem to have one thing in common…they love Tulane and they are very happy with their choice. Of course, I am sure there are those who are not happy, however, I have never heard that Tulane’s students are stuck up. I consider my son a very normal young man. He is thrilled with his decision to attend Tulane and he loves it. Best of luck in whatever you decide.

I will admit that we have a pretty good looking student body. I’d say 95% of people here are very friendly and nice  Stuck up people do exist, but they are few and far between.

haha okay thats good to hear… so what is your favorite/least favorite thing about tulane?

Favorite- Neuroscience Program, Location (NOLA!!), Friendly Profs
Least Favorite- Food (I’m a vegetarian from a vegetarian-friendly city haha)

How is LGBTQ life? Specifically the L part.
Is there a good amount of Tulane pride?
What is the general vibe of Tulane? Sleepy, excited, active, etc?

Kat1234: I haven’t really come across any stuck-up people! i know people assume that about tulane because its such an expensive school but while a good amount of people there are well off, they hardly ever talk about money or flaunt it. There are still mostly the typical college students who are struggling to even pay for take-out. Everyone i’ve met is super nice. Also, this is just an opinion, but the guys seem to be slightly on the unattractive side. As a girl, i’d say the girls seem normal looking.

My favorite thing- my friends, the campus, the weather, nightlife, new orleans in general. I also really like my dorm, we have brick walls on the inside and it looks awesome.
Least favorite thing- the wifi stops working sometimes

Serenen: the LBTQ life seems good, i know a lot of gay guys who seem to be accepted by everyone and have a lot of friends. I know New Orleans has a LGBTQ festival in the fall called southern decadence and most of the tulane students go to it! As for the tulane pride, there is a lot. A lot of people wear tulane clothing around campus and everyone loves the school. The football games are kind of a downer though, only like half the students go. I’d say the general vibe of Tulane is active, everyones doing something whether it be studying, eating, partying. To be honest, no one gets bored here.

Ok I have one: what’s the political leaning of most of the student body feel like? Conservative, Liberal, Moderate, Mixed? I have to ask because I’m a democrat in Alabama and there are no good options here for places to speak your mind.

I’d say the campus as a whole leans liberal. This can also be seen in the fact that Tulane College Democrats is at least 3-4X as big as Tulane College Republicans. There are many politically-minded people here, so I doubt you would have any problem “speaking your mind,” no matter your political standing.

Anything you guys can tell me about the ROTC detachments? Air Force in particular.

Just posted this on another thread too, so forgive the repetition!

My daughter has been accepted for Fall 2012 (woo-hoo!) and we are looking at dorm choices just to get some ideas. She is a real hyper-organized neat freak and she thinks she would be happier in a suite-type dorm set up rather than the big Monroe or Sharp situation.

How hard is it to actually get into Wall, and do any of you current Tulane students have any thoughts on the subject? I suppose if she got a similarly neat roommate it wouldn’t be too bad no matter what dorm she is assigned to.

Thanks in advance!

How is diversity on campus? Are black students represented on campus?

I’m waiting to hear back about the DHS as well as admissions from other colleges, so I won’t be able to enroll until April if I come to Tulane. Will this ruin my chances of getting into the residential college or honors dorms, since they have limited spots?

On the Tulane website, which hasn’t been updated for the upcoming year yet, it says “Incoming First Year students will be provided with information about applying to live in Wall Residential College in May 2011.”

I’m hoping that means that we should be safe, as I’m in the same boat as you.

Also, I found an article for 2010 and it said, “The deadline for any new student to apply for residency in Wall is Sunday, May 9, 2010 by 11:59pm.”

Exactly. Housing doesn’t even really start until after the May 1 deadline.

@ butaneVeins I guess we’re good then :)

This seems like a silly question, but I have to ask, would someone from the west (pacific NW more specifically) fit in at Tulane? I know a very large percentage come from the New England area.

What is the dating scene like on campus?
