Thanks for reading all that (if you actually did) I’m pulling High A’s in all my classes currently, and assuming I do so in the future, what colleges should I expect to apply/ go to? (planning to major in computer science) Brutal honesty is key please ( I’m ok with Caltech or MIT being too far out of reach) Furthermore, are there any classes I should modify/take outside of school to give myself an advantage over nonapplicants for majoring in computer science?
CS is often housed in the college of engineering, so it might be to your benefit to take calculus and physics. Taking those classes for the first time at the college level can be rough.
Don’t focus on specific schools yet. Maybe visit some near you to see what you like and don’t like in a college.
It is way too early to think about specific colleges (especially the hyper-competitive ones). You don’t even have one full year’s GPA and you have no standardized testing. You also need to recognize that HS should be an experience in and of itself – a time of learning and growth and not just a 4 year college application prep experience.
It is good to take school seriously and know that college will be on your horizon, but it is too early to start planning for specific colleges. I would highly recommend that you get off of CC until your junior year.
For now you should focus on:
–Working hard, learning, and doing as well as you can in the most challenging curriculum you can manage.
–When the time comes study for standardized tests.
–Get involved in activities you care about and work towards making meaningful contributions to those activities.
–Enjoying spending time with your family and friends.
@oceanman32 - Congratulations for the early planning, and I do not think freshman year is too early - my son picked out his school in Jr High, and used it as a motivator and class selector guide.
If you are thinking top engineering schools, IMHO - You should try to kick up your math sequence - shoot for at least Calc BC senior year. BTW - You might not need to take AP Eng lit senior year - check out the MIT and CalTech AP credit websites - my son’s school only gave AP credit for either AP Lang or AP Lit, not both. This can free you up to take more science like AP Chem and AP Physics C. Good Luck!
