Current NEU Student Taking Questions!

I have another (easy) question: what bank is the best to use for students? I want to just set up my student/free/noperk checking account now and not have to worry about it in the midst of welcome week.

Bank of America is alllllllllll over campus-- easily the most accessible. I have TD Bank so I usually only get to use their ATMs when I go to the [TD Bank] Garden lol

What is the policy on entering dorm buildings beside your own…to visit friends? Do they have to have you as a guest or can you just go in using your NUID?

In most dorms, there are proctors who have to sign in every single person who does not live in that dorm. You can use your Husky card to sign in (or any other form of photo ID)-- and you will count as one of the three guests they can sign in. The person who you are visiting must come down to the lobby to sign you in (and they must have their Husky card to sign you in).

ahh that’s what i figured. Thanks for the answer! I actually just thought of one more question-- Is there a curfew for the dorms? Are you not allowed to sign people in after a certain time?

Nope, not at all. Proctors are there 24/7.

Do you know of anyone who wasn’t able to get a hold of their roommate? I can’t find her on facebook and she won’t respond to my email. What did they do?

It’s summer. Maybe she is somewhere without Internet access or isn’t used to checking her Husky e-mail. Or maybe she just doesn’t want to be thinking about college stuff yet.

The only thing that you would really have to know before move-in is if you want to rent/buy the microfridge, which you don’t have to decide any time soon (I believe? Could be wrong.) Give her some time (I don’t think roommate assignments have been out for more than a week or two at this point) to respond. And if she doesn’t, you’ll have plenty of time to get to know her once you move in :)

What do you know about 337 Huntington Ave??? especially the two double rooms?

I registered for a late orientation- will that mean crappy classes?

Also on a sidenote, @chiefs111, I’m in 337 Huntington too. Check out the facebook group, there’s pictures. I know so far that we get a kitchenette…

I’m trying to get a class changed because I have an AP score that I can use. I sent an e-mail and received one the next day telling me to pick the class I want instead. I haven’t gotten another reply in over a week. I sent it twice, and to an additional person in the department (I’m in architecture). Is there a better way I can do this?

Just kidding. I checked on myneu, and they switched me. I guess they just decided not to tell me.

How strict are the rules about what can be brought with you into a dorm room? I remember reading somewhere that “no furniture of any kind” can be brought in, but the examples they gave as not allowed were futons and mattresses.

I get why those aren’t allowed, but would I be able to get away with bringing an office chair in? (or bringing it in sometime after move in?) I think thats a pretty reasonable request so you’re not stuck with their plastic stacking chair lol.

Also, what about one of those cheap plastic folding tables… the desk they have looks small in the photos, thought it might be helpful to add some surface area.

Thanks in advance.

It’s a lot easier to bring things that aren’t technically allowed during move-in than after. During move-in, you just put it in the bottom of the crate that you wheel in. After move-in, you’re blatantly bringing it in (most people won’t care, but if the RA/RD office is right there, they might call you out on it).

Be careful about bringing in tables that can be perceived as pong tables (or table extensions to be used for pong). I remember seeing some guys get busted for bringing in that type of table during move-in last year.

I don’t really know how necessary it is to expand the surface area of the desks

The desks are a good size, you don’t need to add to them.

You aren’t allowed to bring in anything that has a fabric or cushion or whatever. It’s for bedbugs, which can get in anything. My first year an RA doing room checks said we couldn’t have our barstools either, even though they were wood. Others would include large plants (one kid tried to bring in an entire christmas tree), butterfly chairs, animals other than a fish, tiny holiday lights (or any halogen lights)…

What with the halogen lights? I read that on the website too.

They get really really hot. Like if you touch them, they’ll burn you. Obviously that’s not the main concern (because if you go around touching hot lights, you probably shouldn’t be in college), but if someone left it on and went out, it could set something on fire. Not a huge possibility, but one they’d rather avoid. Not many things use halogen lights, but check all the lamps and bendy floor lamps before you buy them, just to make sure.

I am trying to switch out of calculus because of an ap test, but I can’t get an e-mail response, and there is nothing on my portal that will let me change classes. Would the office of the registrar be the correct person to call to get my class switched?

No, it’s still your advisor. If you listed advisor for your last name by major isn’t responding, try emailing the head advisor for you major. You may have an old email address or something. They sometimes don’t update websites.
