My D audition for NYU in Chicago on 2/4 and I believe her audition was checked off as received on Albert about a week / week-and-a-half ago? (We’re thinking that it’s not a good sign since decision was made but no results communicated…)

Decisions come out end of March/April 1. Its not neccessarily a bad sign!

^^^That is correct. NOBODY has gotten results unless they applied in the Early Decision round for NYU. Everyone will hear around the same time from NYU in late March (by April 1). Whatever you see online for a status has nothing to do with the end result for NYU.

While I realize it is confusing, but notification processes differ greatly among colleges. Some notify on a rolling basis and others notify all applicants at one time around April 1 or late March, both acceptances and rejections. NYU falls into the latter group.

Thanks Soozievt for the reassurance!

Last year acceptances were sent out on March 25th by email from NYU. It will not have any mention of Tisch, but know that this acceptance is one and the same. The studio placements were emailed on April 7th last year. Good luck to everyone!

I was wondering if you could give some information about how kids who originally applied for MT but were placed in an acting studio feel about the school and their training. I am sure you must at least know of some people where that is the case, and I was wondering if anyone could chime in on the topic. Thanks!!

thisismegan, I can’t tell you how those students “feel,” but I can share my observations. There are a lot of MT-inclined students in the various acting studios. Some of the studios actually do some voice and dance such as ETW, Playwrights, Strasberg (Strasberg isn’t taking new students). Also, they can take private voice. Students from the acting studios get cast in the musicals, including lead roles. There are MT-talented kids throughout Tisch and not just in the MT studio. My daughter was in an award winning coed a capella group at NYU and many members were not from the MT studio (this is a very selective group to get into). A couple were not even from Tisch! (one of the kids in her group who has played leads in Broadway musicals wasn’t even a Tischie!) Anyway, there are opportunities to do some voice and dance in some of the studios, take private voice, and be cast in musicals, even if in an acting studio. Also, my D had a few friends who were in acting studios who got into the MT studio (which was CAP21 at the time) for their advanced studio (at Tisch, after two years of your primary studio, you can audition to do another studio for your advanced training).

You might be surprised but many students who are placed in the MT studio (at the time, this was CAP21) CHOOSE to do an acting studio for their advanced studio, even if MT is their main thing. I can count my D as one of these. She did CAP21 for five semesters and ETW for three semesters. (when she entered college, this was never the plan) I know others who did CAP and then went on to train in Playwrights, ETW, Stonestreet, etc. for advanced studio.

Also, Playwrights Horizons has a MT Workshop semester (or it may be a full year, I’d have to look up the details) that you can do and so if you are placed in another studio, that is an option to do later on.

I know a number of kids who trained in the Acting studios at Tisch who have gone on professionally to be cast in musicals. Obviously, these individuals have MT talent.

Quick question - do ALL tisch students in all of the acting studios audition for the plays/musicals? Is there so much competition that many people have trouble getting parts in the shows? How are the performance opportunities?

Also, how intensive is the dance training?

There are many levels of Tisch productions. For a mainstage musical or play, any Tisch student from any studio (MT or Acting) may audition and both types get cast in these productions. Then, there are studio level productions just for those in that particular studio. So, those are only open to those attending that studio. Some studio productions are open to other studios. Then, there are shows called GAP shows that are student directed productions and open to any Tisch student. There are also many other productions such as student directing projects (those studying directing put on productions open to students from any studio) or Independent Projects (original pieces) by ETW students open to anyone. Those are some of the main examples. So, for some levels of shows, anyone can audition from any of the Tisch studios and for some productions, they are limited to their own studio. My daughter was involved in every example of types of shows I just mentioned while at Tisch. Most whom I know who have attended have performed in some types of productions. Not everyone is in a mainstage show. While the school is big, there are also way more production and performance opportunities than in a smaller school and so it is all relative. But there are no guarantees in casting.

As far as dance training, I personally cannot answer regarding New Studio as my D went to CAP21, and truthfully, there has only been one “year/class” in New Studio and so they cannot comment about the entire four years. I know in CAP21, for each year/grade, there were four levels of ballet, four of tap and four of jazz. I have heard that New Studio has moved into leveling their dance classes. Assuming that the students in New Studio are similar to those in the past admitted to CAP21, there is a range of dance talent and experience which includes some kids, like my own, who had been dancing their entire lives. Some are fairly new to dance. My D was challenged but was not of course in New Studio but I can’t imagine it being that different.

By the way, you will also be performing in classes a lot. Also, they have added cabaret classes that culminate in musical cabarets in NYC venues, since my D has graduated. You could also audition for an a capella group…my D was in one for all four years and also performed a great deal with that group too. Several members have gone onto Broadway and other professional theater.

Thank you so much!

So should we be hearing soon? It says LAST year they heard about ACCEPTANCES through an email around this time. Would we hear if we’re rejected or wait-listed as well?

My daughter found out on a Saturday around March 22 or 23 with a weird email stating something like “back your bags for an accepted students day”…that was followed up with a letter confirming her acceptance into Tisch drama a week later. Studio assignments were also by emailed around April 7. That came at a weird time too-thursday night at 11pm! Some people were also accepted by letter (no email) and never got the invite about the accepted student day. I think rejections/wait lists were later…

Just got an admissions decision emailed to me! I got in! Don’t know what studio yet…any idea when assignments for studios will come out?

Just got rejected… :/

Congrats! Studio assignments often come out the first week of April.

Last year daughter received Tisch acceptance via email March 25th; received New Studio on Broadway MT assignment via email two weeks later, April 8th. Good Luck!

Does anyone know how many are accepted to Tisch? Also wondering specifically
how many they accept into the Musical Theatre program specifically…

Tisch drama is 300-400. This year my new studio class has 64 MTs, about 32 acting. They said yesterday that they are keeping the same numbers for this year.

64 MTs per grade or in total?

^^^64 per grade level.

Please understand that in the studio classes, they break into four groups of 16. Class sizes are therefore 16 people.
