Straight talk about New Studio NYU MT

Non-biased current student of New Studio MT here. Feel free to private message me with questions and I will private message you back.

I will do my best to give you an HONEST answer that does not promote the school but doesn’t bash it either. If I had heard the honest opinions of the students about NYU MT, I may not have chosen the school, (while others might have) so PLEASE ask everything and anything because information is valuable in the college selection process.

To be truthful, many of the students in the program have very mixed feelings, some hate it, and some love it, but I will do my best to explain all the viewpoints. But privately over message so it’s not public :)

NYUmusictheatre, Good for you! I hope you can offer more open comments regarding the state of NSB, so that all–which are really quite a lot of people reading–can benefit. PMs are nice and I’ve used them occasionally. Only once have I shared a contact with my DS. Remember, we are all anonymous here. You are safe, lol!

I hope you don’t think my comments are made with rose colored glasses about NSB. My kid is smart, honest and committed. He feels the bumps and adjustments, just like everyone else. Perhaps the best piece of advise I can leave everyone with is, this is a new program. Be patient. Give it time. Very important people have aligned themselves to this program and want to see it succeed.

I’m out. Good luck and share the love as well as the angst.

I agree with Bville lady. We all have to remember that it is a new program. I also would like to see the opinions of NYUmusictheatre shared and not just private message. With input, either positive or negative, can come change that might benefit the studio in the long run…

just to clarify I am a current sophomore

NYUmusictheatre, I’ve got several questions for you.

1) How strong is the emphasis on acting in the program?
2) How many kids are in MT in your year?
3) What do you think the biggest flaws in the program are?
4) Do you feel there is a competitiveness to the extent of animosity amongst classmates in the program?
5) What do you most regret about attending New Studio?
6) What is the best thing about attending New Studio?

I’m sorry but what is New Studio?

New Studio is the name of one of the studios at NYU. They have straight acting and musical theatre. They do take acting some classes together but they are separate. It was brand new last year to NYU and took the place of CAP 21 and Strasberg. The other studios are Experimental Theatre Wing, Meisner, Playwright’s Horizon, etc. My son is a sophomore at NYU for straight acting in the New Studio (formally- New Studio on Broadway- NSB) and he absolutely loves the program and the school!

And although it technically took the place of Strasberg, it does NOT teach Strasberg! I too am a sophomore actor in NSB and many prospective students have made that mistake…

Hi operationgold7! You must know my son then! He’s Oedipus in The Seven! Thanks for clarifying that NSB does not teach Strasberg.

Yes, of course I know him! We’re doing a scene in acting class actually.

I have met so many parents and friends of my son’s and daughter’s by going on this anonymous site! I’m so proud of both of them so sometimes my posts give them away. (of course, on this thread- it was a dead giveaway!) PM me and tell me a little about yourself. Hopefully- your scene went well! I also met the mom of one of the MT students at NYU on CC. It truly is a small world! :)

We are very much anonymous and that’s a good thing for those posting here. Still, we do sometimes connect via PMs and just common sharing. It’s really helpful when a student posts, however. This being the Tisch New Studio (NSB) sub-forum, it’s a great place to post questions and get answers. We encourage the kids who are students at NSB to post. Realistically, we know how crazy busy you all are!

Just a plug. I saw THE SECRET GARDEN this past weekend at the NSB Studio. Holy Cow! The level of vocal talent was stunning. The acting–which is very important to me as an MT parent–was moving, comic (at the appropriate moments) and just dead on. Dialects were here and there. Dance aspects very intriguing. The kids took it pretty far for a workshop production. My thoughts leaving the building: Wow. What talent.

So, I guess, to anyone wondering about Tisch NSB right now. I’m a pretty impressed parent!

^ Awww! I so wish I could have seen Secret Garden and your fabulous son. I wish they could video the shows so we far away parents could see them! I hated missing Marat Sade and now Oedipus coming up. I would have loved to have seen how my son handled the part with a bum knee and a broken nose! Glad to know that NSB is doing impressive shows!

BVille Lady: Was your son Ben Weatherstaff in Secret Garden? If so, he’s in my Computer Programming class, sitting next to me right now, and watching me type this.

operationgold7, Naturally, I cannot reveal my identity, lol. But I will say this: Ben Weatherstaff totally killed it with his Yorkshire dialect!

Supportive, Maybe we can talk our friend operationgold7 into attending THE SEVEN and reporting back to us? We know how supportive the NSB kids are of one another and their artistic endeavors.

To all the NSB hopefuls out there waiting for your studio assignment, good luck and best wishes!

Definitely! So- operationgold7- PLEASE go see The Seven and PLEASE tell us what you think! Also, please tell me if you can tell that my son’s nose is broken- he said he can’t tell and wouldn’t send a picture. He doesn’t sound any different so maybe he doesn’t look any different!

And about the studio assignments- NYU really knows what they’re doing so trust them when they place you in a studio- even if it’s one you didn’t think you wanted!

Good point, Supportive. All the Tisch primary studios have a great deal to offer. You can’t go wrong with any of them. I truly mean that too. My son auditioned for MT but told the auditors he would be happy with any of the studios. He meant it. So, fingers crossed to all Tisch candidates on your studio assignments!

So exciting!!

So NSB is the one music theatre studio in Tisch, but it also includes some straight acting kids? If you are assigned to NSB, do you automatically have the option of studying MT or are some kids in NSB assigned to a straight acting track?

If you want MT- then NSB is the MT studio. Only NSB MT students study MT. They also have a separate Acting track. They do take acting classes together but they stay in their track of either MT or straight acting. My son does not study MT- only straight acting. However, he also has to take a voice class and dance class. Most straight acting programs require movement and voice classes. I know that students who audition for MT are placed in NSB for MT- if they are accepted. However, if you don’t get accepted into MT, you can be assigned for straight acting in NSB or placed in another straight acting studio. It’s just funny to me that the last role and current role that my son is doing has required him to sing and dance. However, we’re not talking the same kind of singing and dancing you would see in shows like Les Miz or Chicago. Hope this clarifies things! :)

Yes, thanks! So when people find out their studios (maybe tomorrow?) even if they are assigned to NSB it doesn’t necessarily mean they’re on the MT track?
