Hi- I feel a little out-of-the-loop about how Tisch’s MT program actually works. I have looked at the website a few times and for some reason, if the whole process is completely spelled out somewhere, I don’t see it. What I have understood from reading here, from hear-say over the years, and from going back to try to find the whole thing on the website, it seems that: a student auditions and is put in one of 4 studios for 2 years (if they want MT, they may end up in a non-MT studio and vise-versa), then the student moves on to some kind of advanced studio. What are the 4 possible studios? Is only one a MT studio (i.e. is New Studio on Broadway the only MT studio?)? And does this mean that all the drama people, MT or not, audition for everything and then if accepted they are put where the faculty believe they best fit?

Showgirlsmama,

First, there are seven studios at Tisch, not four (there used to be 8).

New Studio on Broadway is the only studio at Tisch that offers MT (though some other studios have some singing and dance but are primarily acting studios).

When a student auditions, they will only be considered for the MT studio (New Studio) if they sing and dance at the audition. So, many applicants already know they just want an acting studio and only do an acting audition. Maybe about half of the applicants attempt to try to be admitted for MT. So, no, not every applicant is considered for the MT studio.

IF you are an applicant trying for MT, you can say “I will only accept a MT studio (which is New Studio)” or “I want to be in the MT studio but if I can’t get placed there, I will accept another studio placement.” If you say “MT only” and are not admitted for the MT studio, then you will not be admitted at all to Tisch. But if you are considered for the MT studio and they cannot place you there, and you said you would then be willing to be considered for an acting studio placement, they may then consider you for that if they are interested in you. THen, once you have acceptances in hand, you can decide if you still wish to attend Tisch even if placed in another studio other than New Studio for MT. Do not make the mistake of thinking that saying “MT only” will increase your odds of getting the MT studio. If you are auditioning for MT and they want you for MT, the odds are the same no matter what you say. The difference is that if they can’t or are not willing to place you in the MT studio but are still interested in you for Tisch’s BFA, at least you will be considered for another studio at that point, rather than dismissed entirely off the pile.

Then, once you are in Tisch, you enter in the studio in which you are placed which is considered “primary studio” and stay for two years. After two years, you have the option to continue in that studio for your “advanced studio” years or to switch to a different studio, though some of these switches involve auditions into some of these studios, though not all. So, there are options once you are there.

Also, acting studio students can audition for the Tisch-wide musicals and many of these students are cast in them (many of them are very talented in terms of MT and even go onto MT careers). Also, some studios, like Playwrights or ETW do some singing and dance (Playwrights Horizons even has a MT practicum semester).

Hope that helps.

I suggest that anyone auditioning for Tisch trust the process. They really want the best for each student, and have, in my opinion, a great system of auditioning and studio placement. My D is a sophomore at Playwrights this year. From age 10 on, she was intent on a career in musical theatre. Private voice, dance, acting classes…everything was geared toward MT. She is an excellent singer and dancer, as well as an actress. Her first love was always the big musical, and she had lots of on-stage experience. At first, when she was placed in a studio other than New Studio, she was skeptical. What she discovered last year was a love of acting, directing, technical and other facets of the business of theatre. She gained a real strength and confidence in her acting ability. She still sings and dances, but I can see that her longevity in the business and her potential for a succesful career will be greatly enhanced with these broader horizons. I’m not sure she will go back to MT when the opportunity arises, but she still has that, and so many other, options.

^^^That’s a good post and very apt.

I know my kid ONLY wanted to study MT when she applied to college and did in fact end up in the MT program at Tisch (which then was CAP21 studio). I would never have imagined her doing another studio, but lo and behold, for her final three semesters, she chose to do ETW studio and broadened her training. But I think as a high school kid, she would never have realized this. She is so happy she trained at both CAP21 and ETW. She is involved in several facets of the business and surely MT is one of them, but performing in musicals is not the only thing she does.

I also went to mention the numerous friends she has from Tisch who were NOT in the MT studio, but who had extensive MT backgrounds and are very talented when it comes to MT. Many of these MT kids who trained in the acting studios have gone onto MT careers, including being cast on Broadway in musicals in fact. It is hard for a HS kid to realize this sometimes, but this is my observation now that she has gone through college and looking at all her friends who are working in MT today professionally.

Thank you all very much (esp soozievt) for the info and explaination! Very helpful!

wow! what a helpful thread! :)

I was also wondering if it’s possible to apply for the MT program after enrolling at NYU for a different major, like sometime during freshman year?
Is this considered taking on a second major? Is that possible?
(considering the majors are in different departments of the Tisch School of the Arts)

As far as I know, that would not be possible as the MT Major is very intensive. Even transfer students must start at the “Freshman” level. I’m not 100% sure though. You would have to contact one of the academic advisers at New Studio.

Not sure if anyone answered you but yes, it is a four yr and you do get a BFA. My D is currently in Tisch’s new studio which is MT

You can double major in MT and at the College of Arts and Sciences, but yes, it would be tough! If you want to transfer to Tisch from within NYU, you have to go through the artistic review, and while your academic credits would obviously transfer, I do think you’d have to start from the beginning with the studio training.

I have a question for anyone enrolled currently at Tisch in any of the 7 studios… NYU has been my dream school since I was in 8th grade so I decided to apply early decision to up my chances as much as possible. Here are my statistics:

Academics:
GPA- 3.8 out of 4.0
SATS- 1700
ACTS-26
Class Rank- 83 out of 425 (top 20%)
I have taken AP, honors, and CP level classes all through out high school

Extra Curriculars:
Theatre Troupe (I’ve been in over 20 productions and directed 2 productions)
Concert Choir
Chorale (elite singing group)
Noteworthy (acapella singing group)
Senior Class Executive board
Blue Eagle Ambassador
Principal- student advisory board
glee club
Dream kids (community service singing group)
Part time job for 3 years

Please let me know if my statistics are at a point where I may be considered for admission. There was something I might have been reading into too much of but the professor who took care of my acting audition and interview asked only me out of the 5 other people he interviewed “if I was interested in other studios at NYU if I didn’t get into the MT program…” I don’t know if he asked anyone else that or maybe he just saw something in me… or maybe I’m just going crazy… ANYWAY, I did tell the professor who auditioned me( a short, bald, somewhat hispanic looking man who didn’t seem to show much emotion but who was still very nice) that I would be interested in any of the 7 studios. And then during my singing audition the piano player said that I did very well as I left the room… So yeah I don’t know about that but if someone could please let me know what my chances are of getting in, that would be awesome! I did do early decision so hopefully that boosts my chances. And also, Does anyone know of anyone that went or is going to tisch that had the same academic profile as me or even possibly lower??? PLEASE LET ME KNOW ASAP:)))

All I can say is that my D had a lower GPA but higher SAT scores. she also applied early decision and was also asked if she would consider all of the studios. She was accepted into the MT program but she was also strong in dance. I am pretty sure that a lot comes from your audition so best of luck to you!
