Hi, I'm a senior who's applied to 13 colleges from various states and I want to go into engineering (preferably chemical). Over winter break I drove through Lehigh and Lafayette because it was far too freezing to be walking around plus admissions was closed so no tours.

I was just curious, cause I applied to both of them, what you guys liked the most about Lehigh and Lafayette..? What made you think "I definitely want to go here"?

In addition, what were some negatives to the schools? (Because it's always good to have the pros and cons).

My D is a sophomore at Lafayette and absolutely LOVES it. We did look at Lehigh but it wasn’t what she wanted (she had her heart set on attending a LAC not a mid sized university). She loves the size of Lafayette the students, the close relationships she has forged with professors as well as their accessibility outside of class, the quality of her classes, how easy it is to get involved in a wide range of activities, to name a few. She is never at a loss for things to do there. Many people apply to both schools. I suggest you post this on the Lehigh and Lafayette pages.

I’m an alum of Lafayette and a parent of teenagers. I chose Lafayette because I wanted an engineering program at a small sized LAC. And I also love the Williams Center for the Arts because I was into theater. It was easy to navigate campus (without the hills like Lehigh), get involved in many EC’s and use the resources available on campus. There’s a FB group for prospective Lafayette students.

Regarding Lehigh, there is a link on their admissions page where you can read blogs written by current students. I believe one of them is a freshman engineer. Best wishes to you and come April, I hope you have many good choices.

I’m not a big fan of LACs for an engineering education. I think research is a vital component, and Lehigh will give you a lot more opportunities in that regard.

I agree with rogracer. I am from the Lehigh Valley area. Go with Lehigh… better Engg. school and better students. So for Engg, kids from my area…they either choose Lehigh/Penn/CMU or Penn State. I really don’t understand the reason for the fascination for doing Engg. from a tier-2 private school a la Lafayette or Bucknell.

I know people who have done really well out of the engineering programs of both Lafayette and Lehigh. They are both accredited and well respected. I’d focus on what type of schools you feel you will be happiest at – at LAC or a mid-sized university and go with that.
