Current stern student, any question?

I wont ask you to chance me , but what were your stats if you dont mind?

Also, what dorm are you in and what do you think of it? What do you think of the other dorms? Assuming you are a freshman.

how is the student life within stern? Are you guys a play hard but work harder type? Or something else?

I'm Stern 2011, my stats were:

GPA UW 3.85 W 4.6
SAT M720 R800 W800
SAT II US History 740 Math I 700 Biology 730
AP US History 5 Biology 5 Calculus AB 5
I was class Valedictorian out of 280
National Merit Commendation
State Supreme Court Essay Winner w/scholarship
Academic Achievement Award for my High school each high school can award two

Lived in Rubin last year (not bad, no central air, great location), met lots of nice people. Living in Carlyle Court this semester with 2 of my freshman year suitemates. Will be spending next semester in Prague.

im in third north, i originally didnt want an apartment style dorm, but now i cant imagine living with only one room and no common room or kitchen like the traditional ones. It is great having a courtyard, and having a dining hall. However, when i wake up late for class, i do wish i lived right on campus in Goddard.

Stats
third in class, M:680 (everyone told me this would hurt me, but i guess not), V:800 W:800
NHS, DECA, no real leadership positions, some work experience and volunteering.

My advice: don't be afraid to embellish your resume, as long is there is some truth in it, and you are not caught in an outright lie, it is ok. I kept my resume completely honest, and that didn't help me get into some other schools.

As a freshman, you dont have many stern classes, so student life basically revolves around common hour, but you might have CAS classes then.

How is it like being a college student in NYC?
Are students generally unfriendly there as I've been told?
What are all of these different NYU schools?
Are they more like NYU-Manhattan, NYU-Brooklyn ( Such as University of Michigan-Flint, University of Michigan- Ann Arbor) or is it just a college consisting of your prefered major?

Ive been kinda worried about not having any real leadership positions, but that fact that someone didnt have any kinda makes me feel better.

Coolbrezze:

It is more of just a college consisting of your preffered major, not like the same university at different sites. They are all on Manhattan, and in the same general area I believe.

hsseniorlooking JDP3990 - both of you seem to have almost perfect SAT I scores.

Does every admitted student have scores at your range?

Stern SAT Scores avg 1350 - 1410 for Math & Reading. I don't think they worry about the writing component. I wouldn't embellish anything, myself. But I wasn't applying Ivy. Too many kids get hung up on the top ten school thing, and life is over if they don't get in.

I wasn't big on leadership things in High school either. In fact not embellishing my leadership like my friends did or guidance counselor wanted kept me off NHS. Cie La Vie. I was in some clubs and did alot of volunteering, but I also worked 20/hrs per week, so I wasn't just sitting home either.

No matter where you end up going to school. If you apply yourself, do well, you do fine. Lots of great schools out there that don't have the best rankings.

I find NYU pretty friendly. My dormates who I met as a freshman are in CAS, and Steinhardt. I also have friends who are/were in GSP. Stern kids are fairly competitive. But overall pretty friendly too.

Although NYU is 60/40 female to Male, Stern is more like 50/50. We have a large international population. Stern also has a large group of Asian and Indian students.

just wondering
How much of a distraction is NYC? with all the wonderful stuff (concerts, gatherings, etc)

Most NYU students are very friendly, and yeah there are distractions inside the city. Most of the time, during the weekends, my friend and I would just go out and explore the nightlife.

coolbrezze - i'm not in stern, but I just thought i'd answer this - there's no such thing as NYU - Manhattan and NYU - Brooklyn...it's one private university located in manhattan, specifically in greenwich village.

Thanks everyone for answering my question, I'm no longer confuse when students mention Stern etc... Wasn't sure if it was like another branch of school.

I am applying to stern, are there any just flat out horrible classes you have to take?

I suck at standardized test, so I most likely won't get scores like you two, but will not having those kinds of scores but still good ones hurt me?

Lmao that was pretty funny, sorry. NYU's a private university, only public school systems have stuff like that. New York has SUNYs (i.e. SUNY Binghamtam, SUNY Stonybrook) which are the location schools you're thinking of.

in all sincerity, here's my question

:why is it that a large population of sternies stick with sternies? and not only that, why do I like never run into any of you? this is my first year but it seems like there are few exceptions to the stern pack phenomenon. (tischies too, but it's not like you have to be near the tisch's broadway or cantor to see them) much appreciated if you can tell me what's on your minds

jh2633:

My freshman & Sophmore roomates are all from CAS and Steinhardt. I spend time with my college friends (Stern) during classes and afternoon and my dormmates in the evening and weekends outside of study groups or group projects.

I work most mornings.

You just don't hang out with and Sternies, we are not hard to find. Pretty social bunch too.

are there lots of group projects and what do they entail?
