I am a college freshman and applying to Stevens for a possible transfer next year. I would be majoring in finance. I have a friend who currently goes there, and he says that the workload is so bad he is in danger of failing out. He is a technological major, so there is more of a workload there than there would be for finance. I would be commuting, but I just am basically curious about how the classes and professors are, how big the classes are, and how the other students are. Even though I will be commuting if I come, I do want to have people there that I can at least grab lunch with between classes and hang out with. I never party and only drink in moderation when I do, and I am intelligent but typical down-to-earth. Are most of the students here Sheldon Cooper, socially awkward types, or are most very intelligent yet down-to-earth like I am? I will be visiting and having my friend show me around, and he has told me his opinion, but I want to know yours as well. Thanks.
Hello? I see that people have viewed this, I was wondering if I could get an answer.
I am not a student, I am a parent of a perspective student. We visited Stevens in October of 2016 and had a very good impression from the campus. During this East coast trip we visited Stevens, Cooper Union, NYU (not a formal visit, just looked around) and Princeton. The Stevens was the most relaxed campus we saw. Students do not look nerdy at all (and by my daughter opinion it has the highest percentage of cute boys from all the campuses). Our tour guides looked very happy and not stressed out. My daughter also has a friend who is already a student (3rd year I think), he didn’t complain about workload at all. We listened outside of lecture hall. I liked the style of the lecture, and I think students like professor as well. We also talk with some professors while walking around the campus. They seems nice and approachable. Just go visit the campus, it is very compact and beautiful. Talk to the students, ask questions, you will see what you need to see.
@Nata11, thank you. My friend is VERY smart but not a Sheldon type, and he loves it there, and I know of 3 other people that go there, but not on a speaking basis. My aunt’s neighbor dorms there and has only come home for the holidays because she loves it so much. I am transferring from my current college because the social life sucks for people that don’t party like me. There is absolutely nothing to do in the evenings and on weekends, and my classmates never want to leave campus. It’s a shame because the academics at my current school are great, but the social life sucks, and I only have 1 solid friend. I’ve had a couple other solid friends where the friendship has just faded. The one friend I have at my current school commutes, but lives right near Stevens, so we would not stop hanging out if I go there. Also, from your impression, are the classes there (particularly business if you know) too technological for somebody that is not into computers, or will I be fine? I definitely think having some technological skills in business, but I don’t want technology to consume the business education. And I will be commuting if I come, but I still want my classmates to be approachable, and I like what you’ve said. I’m applying this weekend.
@beachguy20, I am not sure about business, I think it is pretty hard on math over there. And I am not sure how are you going to work as a business major without being fluent in related technology. You need to check their program to make sure you will fit. We were there for engineering, I can’t judge how they tech business. But I know that a lot of their students go working for Wall street and securities. So I assume they have a very good technology aspect in their education.
@Nata11, technology for business is very good, so I know that that will benefit me. My friend told me I’d have to take a couple of CS classes, but business would be much more than that. And they do have a business school, so I wouldn’t say business is week there lol.
I am a parent. This forum does not get a lot of attending-student postings (more prospective students with questions), maybe because it is a small school.
I am guessing that finance at Stevens would have a competitive application pool, so you should be strong in math.
There are a wide mix of student types attending. The ones I have met seem to be very intelligent but also good/confident communicators. Yes, there is some nerdiness, but in a good way.
Definitely attend some information sessions in order to see what you are getting yourself into.
Would you be transferring as a freshman, sophomore, or junior? Stevens is an excellent school but very expensive. Do you have a plan for paying the bill?
@STEM2017, I’d be transferring as a sophomore. I would be commuting, so tuition would be $45k. I’d hope to receive some aid, and my grandparents also help out with tuition. Plus I would have a job.
