Current student can answer questions

Hi, I'm a freshmen here at UR and since this site helped me a lot last year, I'll try to give back as much as I can so if anyone has questions about Richmond, let me know.

Explain the advantages and disadvantages of the coordinate college system.

Sure, from what I've seen the coordinate college system is pretty helpful. Considering there are only about 3,000 under grads here then you have two colleges one for men, the other for women and it works out to 1,500 students around in each college. What's helpful is that each college has there own dean and offices and since they're only in there for 1,500 kids its easy to get in touch with them, so if you need to work anything out its really easy. Also, each college has there own student governemnt, spots on the judicial and honor council, etc. so there are a lot of leadership opportunities created by the coordinate college system. The last benefit I've noticed is that there's a lot of tradion in each college which is also pretty cool. The only bad thing I guess even though it doesn't really have to do with the coordinate colleges would be that there isn't co-ed housing, I don't mind this, but some people here want it changed. I mean there is girls dorm 50 feet from mine and the visitation policies are really lax, so it's not a big deal at all. So overall, I'd say you wouldn't even notice the coordinate college system if they didn't tell you about it and from what I've seen it only makes things better, less red tape.

I read in the princeton review book that the coordinate system made dating hard, is that true?

I really can't even guess as to how thay would come up with that. I really wouldn't have even noticed the coordinate college system if I hadn't been told about it.

How is the neighborhood around campus? Is it student friendly?

The campus is in a residential area in the suburbs of the city of Richmond, so really its pretty enclosed by trees. Right round campus there's jsut big houses and I think a golf course. To get anywhere you really need to drive, which is never a problem because so many people here have cars, even freshmen can have them. Within 10 minutes of driving you can get literally anything you would possibly need. There's blockbuster, a movie theatre, tons of places to eat, apple store, best buy, grocery stores and tons of other places, all on one street, West Broad which is about 10 minutes driving from here. You can also get into the city of Richmond pretty easily driving.

What's the social scene honestly like, do you really have to find your own fun like I've read?

The social scene is different for different people, it depends on what you're looking for. From my perspective there are a lot of great parties and anyone can go and they are well advertised. A lot of people also go to the football games now that the team is so good and the tailgates are a good time. As far as non-drinking activities go there are always movies playing and this year we've already had a concert from a band Steel Train, a stand up comedian Theo Von and some other stuff like hypnotist, magician, etc. If you specify what type of social scene you're wondering about i can probably be more clear.

So its like a coed school... but not...?

Is the campus nice?
Was it hard to get into? If you don't mind can you tell us your stats?
Are there a lot of clubs?

Does it run on a liberal arts system or a university one?

how is the political science department there?

Okay to bond 35:

It is a co-ed school, there are two colleges within the University Richmond college for men and Westhampton College for women, I tried to explain the system as best as I could in an earlier post, but if its not understandable just know that you don't notice the difference between our system and one at any other school.

The campus is the very nice, they take good care of it. Theres a lake, all of the buildings match, you can get a better idea by looking at the virtual tour on the website.

There are a ton of clubs, a lot of them are listed on the website, if your intrested in one in particular I can probably tell you if we have it.

It is a liberal arts school, I'm not sure what you eman be liberal arts system but there are required courses in feilds of study that have to be completed and there is a required freshmen course called CORE, where you analyze different texts.

For pajaro:

I know some poli sci majors and they all have said good things about the classes they've had. Personally, I'm in one poli sci class this semester and its by far my favoirte class because the professor is really great. I'm even now thinking about majoring in poli sci. Also, from what I've been told we do pretty well getting kids into law school.

Do they have an altheltic building with different classes, like karate, intermural sports, and things like that?

Is this a place where you have to really find things to do? Or is it always busy and filled with things to do.

I'm a girl so if I got accepted, I would go to the Westhampton college, but will I still be able to say that I went to the Unversity of Richmond? or will I have to say that I went to Westhampton college.

A brand new fitness center is being built and will be ready in january, its supposed to be spectacular. You can read about it online. I'm not sure about karate, but I know they have classes for like yoga, aerobics, etc. We have all sorts of intramurels, right now its soccer and they're pretty competitive.

For the most part I'd say you'll be kept pretty busy, especially if you get involved in a club or sport or something. Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays there are always places to go out at night and its a lot of fun.

You would say you go to the University of Richmond, Westhampton College only means something to the people that go here, everywhere else you'd say you go to the University of Richmond.

night life like?

easy to drink underage or hard?

bump? anyone anwser...

Sorry I've been busy with midterms and such. There is always something to do at night, more so Thursday through Saturday nights. It seems like every thursday there will be at least one or more big party at a club in the city hosted by a fraternity. Anyone can go, and its easy, you just ahve to catch a shuttles run by the fraternity. Friday and Saturdays, there are lots of parties at the apartments on campus and there are also parties off campus or at the fraternity lodges. Also, on Saturday a big event is tailgating the football games. All of these events involve drinking, usually a lot of drinking. It's not mandatory or anything, and there's no pressure, but a lot of people do drink. It's very easy to drink if you want to and you won't get in any trouble unless you're an idiot.

Thanks! for the info! hope i get in...applying Early

Know anyone in the english dept? I'm thinking of applying and visited the school last spring. I'd like to hear about that dept.

I don't know anyone interested in an English major sorry. I'm in two english classes though this semester and the professors I have are pretty good, but other than that I can't help you outt sorry. You should check out the department website though and you can find the e-mail adresses there for professors and I'm sure they'd be more than happy to answer any questions.
